Video Card Upgrade - Strix GTX 980 TI

Featured Replies

Strongly recommend getting a bracket for the card so that you can install an all-in-one cooler. It costs a few bucks and will require some effort but the card will run so much cooler and so much quieter. All of the stock video card coolers are so inefficient that it usually requires the [noisy] fans to quick in quite early...

It doesn't have a stock cooler. It's a STRIX. It has one of the best air coolers on the market.

Well I can safely say I am happy with my upgrade. I can now run with Extended DSF turned on and 8X SSAA+FXAA with fairly high settings elsewhere and still get a solid 30 FPS. This particular card has 3 huge fans and seems very quiet. It seems to be a good match with my i5 3570K running at 4.7ghz (Water cooled). This is a fairly old processor but has been rock solid since the day I brought it.

just for giggles I decided to throw everything up to max and although my PC is no slouch it was still brought to it's knees. I wonder how many other games out there can do the same to a high spec pc like mine.

I am sure that in pursuit of the flight sim holy grail there are many avid enthusiasts out there that have some of the most powerful PC's you can get right now :)

That's it for me now, for the time being that is ....... lol

Thanks to all that replied. As always the advice that can be obtained in forums such as this one is second to none.

Happy Flying !

Richard

Thank You,

No I haven't dabbled in W2XP yet. I stuck to the HDMesh V3. Now I have 16GB DDR3 & the 980 TI maybe it is worth taking a look.

Do I need to remove the HDMesh V3 scenery I have?

I don't see many clouds...do you have any performance shots with cloud layers?

I ask because the main reason I was looking to upgrade to the 980Ti was to run clouds (SMP v3). Right now, I don't run clouds except for the forced cirrus layer in SMP v2.

just upgraded to a 980ti 6 gb also. fired it up with world traffic and OVC conditions on eddf and got solid 30+ fps in the carenado b200, 40+ / 50+ outside. This is on 4k resolution. Ill try a full flight when im done working today.

Let us know! I'm still on the fence here. Wallets been twitching for 3 weeks!

Yes you are correct,

I am running SMP V3 with pretty much standard settings apart from cloud draw distance which I turned up a notch. Can't say I have seen any issues. I will try and get some screenshots this weekend.

I would definitely recommend this card. I think the benchmark scores are actually higher than the Titan X. It does however have 6GB VRAM instead of 12GB

W2XP and GBPro are definitely worth your time.  I'm running a 512 MB card on a 2009 iMac and it works fine on my machine.  Adds a completely new dimension to sim realism.  I think you'll love flying low and slow over the British countryside.  Fly from EGFF to EGGP with GBPro and tell me what you think.

And no, you don't have to remove the HDMesh V3 scenery.

Tried a longer flight from lowi. Full overcast. Using half refresh rate vsync it never gets below 30 fps. Same with about 4/8 cumulus
