Using PMDG 777 ILS

Recommended Posts

Hi,  I am trying to figure out how to set up a basic ILS for the PMDG 777.  The manual and other sites have not been too helpful.  I know how to set it up with the QW757 and Level-D 767, but the 777 is more complex.  With the QW757 and Level-D 767,  I tune in the runway frequency and then the heading and hit LOC, (as I recal).  Does it work the same way with the PMDG 777?  Or more involved.

Tutorial #1.

Select the ILS approach on the DEP ARR page. Done.

I found it.  Looks complex then just putting the runway frequency on the panel and then the heading.  I will see if I can do it. I don't need to put in any "route" information, SID/STAR etc?  I just want it to work the ILS.  I can get the runway frequency and heading off of FSX.

Sorry, I just can't find it.  Do you have the tutorial page number?  On page 92 they discuss  "Category IIIA ILS approach", but it is a bit confusing.

Cray,

It's a lot more simple than you're making it. The FMC auto-tuned everything for you simply by selecting the ILS approach on the DEP ARR page. You do not have to manually do anything like with the 737, 757 or 767.

Unfortunately,  I am having problems figuring it out and only making a mess of it.  It is not simple.    I had to exit FSX and restart it a few times because the FMC became a mess.  I am reading the tutorial over and over, but it just is too complicated for the ILS.   The 757 and 767 is far more easier.  All I had to do is put in the freguency and heading on the flight panel...thats it!  I would have the runway frequencies listings ready ahead of time for the destination airport and when FSX ATC would tell me which runway I was to land. I would input the frequency, for which is far more easier than the PMDG 777 way of doing it.  I also don't want to,or know how for that matter, of puting in any "Route" in the FMC.  I use FSX ATC for the IFR route.  I just like to have the ILS when I am approaching the airport.

There is not other way of putting in the ILS?

Cray, as Kyle said, you do not need to input the frequency and course, the FMC will do it for you when you choose the ILS approach on DEP ARR page.

I cannot figure out the ILS in FMC. despite the tutorial. It would be much easier if I could just input the frequency than figuring out the ILS in the FMC.  Simply selecting DEP/ARR does not do anything as well.

I spent most of the day trying to figure this out.  No luck.  Got tired of having to exit and restart the PMDG 777 in FSX because of the FMC. Any inputs I try and make, it cannot be changed. Selecting "Clear" or "previous page" and "delete" does not do anything.   The tutorial is not clear to me.  As for it being "Simple", it certainly is not.

With all respect, the PMDG 777 is not a "simple" aircraft. It very accurately emulates the systems of a real Boeing 777, and for best results, has to be flown with the same procedures that an actual 777 flight crew would use, which means programming the FMS, entering routes, entering fuel and passenger loads etc.

While you CAN "just fly" the aircraft, without using the FMS, it wasn't designed or intended to be used that way, and trying to avoid the FMS makes it actually much more difficult to do anything useful with the aircraft.

I can only suggest that you continue to work through the tutorial carefully - one step at a time, but it may be a steep learning curve if you're just not comfortable with with the complexity.

Check out Kyle's youtube vids. They're great and he'll show you the FMC starting from the Ident page thorough the Des pages. The T7 is actually more automated than most Boeings and a lot of inputs to the FMC are not necessary. Keep at it you'll get it sooner than you think. Good luck!

I can second that. Kyle does a great job with his video tutorials. Sometimes it's much easier to learn something like FMS procedures by watching it being demonstrated, rather than wading though a printed tutorial which may reference a lot of concepts you are not yet familiar with.

Before I posted my question for the ILS,   I did see Kyle's video tutorials in my Youtube searches for answers, but it was just as complicated, and in some instances, even more confusing what he was demonstrating.  While I do know how to do the doors and fuel in the FMC, the ILS and routes, etc, is well beyond me to figure out.  I guess I will just have to manage without it.

I don't know the Nav Rad(io) key, what it does or how to use it.  Is it for the ILS?  I hope it does not require 10 or 20 steps in the FMC to use it.
