Reusing Windows 7 OEM Disk

Featured Replies

I will be building a new machine this week. I have a Windows ver7 disk that I installed on another machine. That machine has recently been updated to Windows 10.

Can I install the Windows 7 disk on the new machine?

Thanks

No - you have relinquished that license forever if its been over a month - if not you would have to restore that windows 7 asap

You cant update xp to windows 10 without paying 110$ from what I just read - so you should be fine using xp but why

Right now its called a budget. If I were to upgradeXP to Win10 at a later date will I need to reformat my HD and reinstall my FS software or will it install without an issue over top?  Thanks for your help.

I dont know how upgrading xp works you will have to do some homework - from windows 7 to windows 10 worked pretty well - I just did my first fresh windows install and seems to be working even better - good luck with your future updates

No you haven't. What are you talking about, Richard???

If you uninstall W10 from the old computer, and you format the hard drive, the W7 license is still active. If it was an OEM copy, then no, you technically cannot transfer it to a new computer (But to be honest, MS will activate a transferred OEM copy if you tell them your MOBO failed). But if it is a retail license, then yes, you can transfer it without any problems.

W10 does not "consume" your W7/8.1 license. That's absurd.

I have an OEM copy so my situation stands but I wouldn't go back anyway windows 10 is better imo

OEM, stays with the original hardware - not transferrable.

Retail version can be transferred (I've done this on at least 3 machines at this point).

Ah confusion here - thanks as I have retail then as it cost me almost 500 dollars direct from Microsoft - either way would not return to win 7

$500? Must have been the gold-plated edition Rich :) I paid about £160 for it on Amazon some years back.

Yah no kidding but I bought the 120 dollar version and when motherboard went south Microsoft told me to pound sand so - bent over for the no problem version

Very nice of them indeed:) Makes you want to go to X-Plane and Linux :)

Of course if you wait 90 days between installs you can use your OEM just fine disk if you rebuild your PC, my first OEM disk has been on three different MB's and two laptops so far , not all at the same time I hasten to add.

And Richard is wrong, you do not relinquish your W7 licence after one month in W10, I don't know why he keeps spreading this misinformation.

To clear things up this is what Microsoft states: mis-leading as it does not state what happens after one months time but I think you can go back at anytime and not spreading anything I didnt believe to be true never have and why would I now - relax

Can I go back to my old operating system?

Yes, there are a few different ways for you to go back from Windows 10 to a previous version of Windows:

  • If it's been less than a month since you've upgraded to Windows 10, you'll be able to go back to your previous version of Windows from Settings > Update & security > Recovery.

  • If your PC manufacturer provided the option, you might be able to restore your device to factory settings.

  • If options to go back and restore factory settings aren’t available, you can use installation media and a product key to install a previous version of Windows.
