November 27, 201510 yr Please can you help me, I have been trying to get my FS2004 to appear on my screen, I load the 4 discs run the install it tells me everything was installed correctly, but when I press Run or the FS2004 Icon nothing happens. Recently I purchased the IFly B747-4 and was told to place the FS2004 out of a windows protected area, such as programs File x86 etc so I have created a folder on desktop which doesn't work and a further one, nothing seems to allow me to open it, I have uninstalled the Ifly and FS2004 and re-installed the FS2004 but still nothing happens, I have tried to access the FS2004 through other areas of the computer also, but alas nothing Any suggestions would be most appreciated Many Thanks Richard Richard Coombs
November 27, 201510 yr Sir reinstall fs2004 in d or e drive. And properly follow the steps. Also give the correct registration key. My fsx was registered online. I think your fs has gone corrupted. Reinstalling it in d or e drive should remove the problem. Thank u, BBN airways, pilot
November 28, 201510 yr Author Thank you sadly that didn't work also I need to place the fs2004 outside of Window protected areas like Programs x86 to instal the IFly plane, can't understand it, fs2004 is successfully installed then can't be opened, very strange Anyway thank you for your advice Richard Richard Coombs
November 28, 201510 yr You should install FS2004 in its own folder or drive, not in Program files x86 A recent update from microsoft will prevent it running however. There have been many threads on the subject. Search for recent posts from people not being able to run FS9 Peter Schluter
November 28, 201510 yr Author Thank you for the advice, I read that a recent Windows Update KB3086255 was causing problems for folks with FS2004 so I have removed that and thankfully my FS2004 has been working normally since, but i still hold my breath every time I boot it up. For IFly B747-4 I was advised to avoid putting the Ifly plane and FS2004 windows protected areas such as Program Files ProgramxFilesx86 Program Data could you advise a file I can place these in to avoid these areas? Many Thanks Richard Richard Coombs
November 28, 201510 yr I don't think ProgramData is an issue with FS2004. FSX creates a file within ProgramData, but I don't think 2004 does. At least my install didn't. As for the main program; I would create a sub-directory under whichever drive you prefer and install it there. My FS2004 is installed in C:\FlightSiim2004 Files\. I also use the directory for any FS2004 related addons. FlightSim2004 Filles\Flight Simulator 9 FlightSim2004 Files\Real Enviornment Xtreme for FS2004 ... etc. That keeps my flight sim files out of the Program Files, or Program Files (x86) directories. November 28, 201510 yr Author Thank you Guys for the amazing support, I blew the dust off my FS2004 again after seeing the IFly B747-4, I used to love using PMDG NG737 with FSX but FSX probs destroyed the enjoyment, missing scenery/crashes etc; so I couldn't believe it when I couldn't get FS2004 going, anyway i'll pop the IFly B747-4 on and hope I can enjoy trouble free flying once again. Could I ask one last question in terms of FSUIPC I am using a free unregistered one and not the latest, should this be a problem? Many Thanks Richard Richard Coombs
November 28, 201510 yr Install in where it naturally goes.....in the x86 folder. It works fine. Anyone who tells you otherwise is seriously deluded.... You forgot to tell him he may need to disable UAC if he follows your advice. Peter Schluter
November 30, 201510 yr Author Okay will disable UAC many thanks! Could I ask just one more question please, I have just installed the B747-4 IFly Jet & SP1a all is going well however I cannot access the drop box IFLY containing panel Ground Support etc, when I click on anything inside this I just get a blank black screen, just wondered if anyone else has had experience of this and could advice Sorry guys so many questions Many Thanks Richard Richard Coombs
November 30, 201510 yr What the? :S ?????????????? What he describes is a common issue with some graphics cards/addon payware combinations. Running the sim in windowed mode can prevent the problem. I am afraid your posts telling new users to disregard the advice others give is not helpful. Just because you dont have problems does not mean they dont exist for others running a different setup and different addons. Peter Schluter
December 1, 201510 yr You forgot to tell him he may need to disable UAC if he follows your advice. Install in where it naturally goes.....in the x86 folder. It works fine. Anyone who tells you otherwise is seriously deluded.... Hear Hear!! Far too many urban legends & 'experts' out there. My P3D & 2x versions of FS9, all in their default directories, have always worked perfectly. In fact, I just cannot remember which, some payware dev's have also said that UAC must be turned down. Just for fun, I installed yet another FS9 into the C:/'s directory to see if there would be any difference compared to the the x86 directory.. Obviously nothing!!. Windows mode = Alt Enter. Windows 10 has made my sim's seem a bit faster, in booting up & accessing menu's. & thats on a 3 year old i5 4gb laptop. Robin "Onward & Upward" ... To the Stars, & Beyond...
December 1, 201510 yr Installing in the default location isn't just a myth. It can cause issues. Give an example, I was installing aircraft for a friend who had his FS9 in the default location. One of the aircraft.cfg entries it would not allow to be changed. I edited it, saved it, nothing, the changes would simply not take. There are a couple of ways around this and I got it to work. Now, if you are not all that computer savvy, you could sit there for hours trying to figure out what you are doing wrong and why you can't make the changes you want to make. While doing this you might start thinking it's all sorts of other things that could be causing your problem so you may start messing with other parts of your FS installation which have nothing to do with your initial problem. By the time your done, you've completely screwed up FS and you're on AVSIM asking how to get FS working again! lolThere is risk with having FS in the default location. There is no risk having it outside of the default location. Mark Daniels
December 1, 201510 yr Thank you Skywatcher for a voice of sanity. For the benefit of the other posters, I am well aware that FS9 will run perfectly fine in the default location without changing any UAC settings. But some payware products which use load managers to edit the .cfg files will not work correctly. Level-D; Qualitywings;Proflight Emulator are three manufacturers I can think of who specifically state the product should not be installed there. So telling a newbie to install in the default location is just fine until he wants to install one of those products and finds he needs to do a complete re-install of his sim. Peter Schluter
December 1, 201510 yr Jon, yes, it may never be a problem for you. You may be lucky and everything continues to work. So what happens if something doesn't work eventually? Is it the addon itself that is the issue or is it to do with FS being in the default location? You'll be chasing your tail from the start. All I'm suggesting is there is always risk and the potential for problems in the default location while there are no risks installing outside of it. Makes it clear which is the best option if someone is trying to decide where to install. Mark Daniels
