November 27, 201510 yr Hello. I'm hoping someone can answer a quick question for me. I kind of remember a while back reading that the AFCAD program could not be used to edit airport .bgl files created with ADE. For example changing parking codes in spaces, etc. It would make the changes but during the save process something would happen to make it not work correctly. Or something like that. Can anyone confirm or deny? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
November 27, 201510 yr AFCAD 2.21 is an old program. If you use it to edit more modern afcads you may have a problem. Some elements of the scenery may not display properly, it all depends on how the newer scenery afcad was created. So simple answer is you can use AFCAD to edit default/very basic airport afcads, if you want to edit more modern /payware sceneries, especially if they were created in ADE, then you should use ADE. November 27, 201510 yr I wish Flight1 would update AFX so it could handle the new format. I have tried using ADE but found it very confusing.... It's obviously a brilliant bit of software and as freeware, I can only stand in awe at the good folks who developed it, but to my poor old brain, the WYSIWYG approach of AFX is hard to beat....
November 27, 201510 yr Not sure which format you refer to, I use AFX 1.1 and it opens any ADE file quite happily. To my knowledge it also preserves all the ADE bits...
November 28, 201510 yr What problems do you have with ADE ? I simply "open from bgl", make my edit and save, then compile. Peter Schluter
November 28, 201510 yr Just want to break an lance for the "old and archaic" Afcad 221: it's the only tool which allows to set runways at a width of 0.4 ft and render them totally invisible. Bernard Visit: Retroavia Forum - FS9 in the pasts
November 28, 201510 yr AFX will open ADE files but you get a warning that if you change anything, you will lose certain features that are only supported by ADE. AFX will only save as an AFX.bgl file.... I guess what I meant to say was that I wish that Flight1 would update AFX so it can do the same things that apparently can be done with ADE... Hope that clarifies....
November 29, 201510 yr Well I am interested (disturbed?) by this notion, as I am forever messing with AFCADs, be they ADE created or whatever. So I picked at random an airport currently on my FS horizon: LFLL. Its "AFCAD" is called LFLL_ADE9_JNS.BGL and so I assume it is an ADE creation. I opened it in AFX, added a couple of random elements, and pressed "save". The file appeared in the appropriate folder as LFLL_ADE9_JNS.BGL with today's datestamp. No warning appeared when saving. It appears in the sim, and apparently intact. Ian, I wonder if you have the latest version of AFX installed? (Mine is 1.1)
November 29, 201510 yr AFX even allows to save FSX Afcads for FS9. Of course without any objects which might be packed with initial files. So I could insert NAS Argentia and Glenview, not available for FS9. Bernard Visit: Retroavia Forum - FS9 in the pasts
November 29, 201510 yr Commercial Member I wish Flight1 would update AFX so it could handle the new format. I have tried using ADE but found it very confusing.... It's obviously a brilliant bit of software and as freeware, I can only stand in awe at the good folks who developed it, but to my poor old brain, the WYSIWYG approach of AFX is hard to beat.... I have to wonder if Flight1 every updates anything, at least in some time. One of their products I have hasn't had the installer updated for Steam, and it's a very small program and very small matter for them to do so, but so far there isn't any interest on their side to do so. If they won't update a simple installer, i doubt they'd update software itself. December 3, 201510 yr We seem to be going off-topic here but I will say that (a) I agree with the comment about Flight1. They used to be (IMO) one of the most creative and respected developers but for the past couple of years they don't seem to have developed much that's new and seem to have become more of a "retail" operation selling products from other developers.... And they have shown very little interest in updating their products for FSX-SE... (Yes, I DO know this is the FS9 forum! LOL) ( B) I do have the latest update of AFX installed. The message doesn't appear with every ADE file and it's probably more frequent with commercially produced products that may have some additional features coded in... (e.g. Orbyx products) And to be honest, most of my time these days is with FSX-SE and so the limitations may relate to functions that are not present in FS9. I still fly FS9 but have almost completely stopped adding new stuff to it and have completely stopped tweaking it. (I already have more addons than I really need and it runs perfectly so....)
