Slight diversion right now. Someone is trying to do openstreetmap stuff for FSX using Sbuilderx , looks like the forest things are coming along , but he is only doing it for India.

Will get back to Xplane Mesh once I through with the air force thing.

Sbuilderx is a very nice tool created by a Portuguese friend :-)

Well, no progress as yet on this mesh, reason I did not have time nor did I know how to fill the holes in the raw DEM files, so today I went and made a mesh for FS2004 which covers NE and SW of India , have not yet tested this but will do so later 2nite.

Anyone need a mesh for India let me know , I think it is a 3 sec arc from Viewfinders, but I am trying to convert the 30 dem from usgs which is more recent from .tif to .hgt , I can convert the .tif to .hgt but the srtm to bgl cries and crashes. More trials n errors needed.

Now I have an app which will fill the missing SRTM data so would be trying it out and if successful will redo the mesh for Xplane.

Today I will try filling the holes DEM holes for Xplane  using Microdem, though it looks complicated.

I have made a LOD11 mesh for FS9 using viewfinderpanoramas DEM files.

Now I am confused between 3 arc / 1 arc , don't know which is better .

Hi HumptyDumpty

1-arc second is more detailed than 3-arc second.  The arc-seconds is the distance between elevation points, so the shorter the distance between elevation points, the more dense and detailed is the data.  1 arc-second is about 30m postings.  3Arc-second is about 90m postings.

And the current STRM30 dataset is pretty good, with the usual caveats.

Hope this helps

Justin

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the info. Cleared the confusion.

Got the missing SRTM data fixed by merging ASTER with SRTM, so the tiles now are from N19 to N08 going south but it only covers the west coast of India.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I also made a MSFS mesh from the same SRTM 1Sec arc DEM :) and yes it works in FSX , I compiled it as LOD11 now I don't know what that means. does it mean a more detailed mesh than LOD9 i don't know.

But my main aim was Xplane's Mesh for SW India and it is compiling now as I merged two different DEM's but I still need to test the merged DEM's in Xplane by flying over it.

Now the tile North 10 East 076 seems to be ok but the airport slope is an issue.  Other tile to check is N13E076.

So far the mesh looks ok, now I need lab rats.

I will skip N19E72 and N19E73 as they are not coming out right , the default mesh for these areas seems ok. Or I will try these two tiles with ASTER or the ones from Viewfinder (viewfinder may not be a 1arcsec DEM)
