Just finished setting up my new Dell UltraSharp U3415W monitor

Recommended Posts

Here is a great example of the FOV. I have a LG 21:9 Curved IPS thats 3440X1440. Here is a quick video I made to show how much viewing area there is.

Check it out. It really is immersive.

Here is a great example of the FOV

Anyone can experiment with the FOV by running FSX in windowed mode and setting the window to a 21:9 ratio. In fact if you buy a 4K monitor bigger than 37" you can run a 21:9 window that's bigger than the Dell display.

OH...

On the Internet it is selling for as low as $649 so no one should be paying much more than that!!  I got this monitor earlier this year and have been recommending it whenever I can in these forums.  Mitch, check out some of the UHD videos in the AVSIM Video forum, especially those from Rob Ainscough (some of the other members have UHD videos too but Rob's are the ones I remember right now).  Here's one of his excellent videos - http://www.avsim.com/topic/498157-bridges-zhuhai-jinwan-zgsd-pmdg-737ngx/  Make sure you go to settings and change the resolution to 1440P.  Looks great!  I watch a lot of member videos on YouTube because they bring a lot more immersion and detail.

Best regards,

Oh...the Video Forum, thanks Jim..I have never actually visited there. Will do.   That's the price I near got it for, but did note that Dell, both in the U.S. and Canada did in fact up their MSRP by $100.00 yesterday. When the supply at 3rP's sells out, I imagine that the price increase will will be factored in.  I read many months ago, that you had decided upon one..and at that time, my interest was peaked... :)  Glad to say that I see myself, why you raved about the monitor back then!!!  As another pointed out, Dell sales come and go...and they also do 'flash' sales.  I waited for that...and that was about 6 weeks ago, now.

The one thing I wanted to point out, though...is that they (Dell) just had an update to the components of the monitor..and that was the reason that everybody had to wait around 4-6 weeks to get theirs.  Mine was in the 'in production' phase for about 4 weeks, before shipment. The monitors made (at least in October/2016) are a fourth series. I have REV-4 on my manufacture date label on the back of the monitor.   3rP (internet re-sellers) can of course have stock that was shipped months ago, and is not the latest REV-4 product.  Just something to note, when deciding upon a seller, other than Dell, itself.

Thanks for the tip, Jim,

Merry Christmas!

Mitch

Man, that was great...and exactly what I see myself!

Thanks for posting!

Can you do this in P3D? I have looked in the settings but cannot find it. Thanks.

Looks like the perfect compromise between single and three monitor setups. I'm currently investigating the LG 38". It has a little more resolution, and the bigger size means even more realistic scale of things.

You don't need settings, you just need a ruler! Measure the width of your display (x), then y = x * 9 / 21.

I am gutted.

Estimated delivery date is postponed to at least 22th of December. Looks like I'll have to be jealous of you guys for a while longer.  :Hmmmph:

Rich...if that is the case...I'd cancel, and order direct from Dell!  You will be guranteed the latest stock production.   Don't feel too bad...it was 5 weeks from my order date, to the happy dance at the front door...

This monitor is wildly popular...word of mouth...and great features...

I'm looking for this beast as well, but I cannot evaluate that at the same price I could buy the Dell and upgrade the video card.

I found the 34" ultrawide a bit too small. I've been using a 40", 46" and 50" TV for the last three years and gotten used to the large size.

Problem is, with one 16:9 screen you get no real sense of speed since your side view is very limited. For that the 21:9 is a great. But I also like things on screen to be as close to 1:1 in scale as possible. The cockpit and scenery is just so much more realistic when it becomes close to real life in scale. Ideally I'l like a 21:9 TV, but only Philips made these and they have stopped production, so the only option is the ultrawide monitors. I have no room for three TVs, and three smaller 27" monitors just gives you more pixels on the side that you really don't need - and will reduce performance.

I just checked your link, and Dell has the U3415W on sale right now...as of today (13/12/16) for you Canadian folks, at $949.99 ($350.00) off of Canadian list.  Just thought to post that.  Happy Hunting! :)

Hi Folks,

Just to add more fuel to the fire - Amazon is stating that U3417W supersedes the U3415W - has more of a curve - and about $100.00 more... I'll wait until after Christmas to decide - give it some time to soak in...

Regards,

Scott

Nah, think I'll have to wait it out as i Sweden they want way more ($300) for the screen and it has a 60 day estimated delivery to boot..

I could have ordered it.   Too much of a curve, brings the ends 'in'...and nothing else in features or res-pixel count, in upgrade.  Same software as well.  It basically is a more pronounced curve...

Ah....okeedokee! :)
