Hardware for P3DV4

i cant see how anything over 16 would really be utilized at least the first couple years of v4.. just think what could be done with double the VAS usage available now? what are we going to do preload 400 miles of hi res textures for no reason?

Why 400 miles?  How much VAS would it take to say load the entire geodesic swath between San Francisco and NYC, preloading a full 360 degrees view out to the maximum possible distance from anywhere in your aircraft?   This means no more I/O and that seems potentially big for impacting smoothness.   So yeah, now much VAS for that?

System:  9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL  64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync.

Aircraft used in MSFS 2024:  Fenix A320,  Aerosoft CRJ, FBW, WT 787X, I-Fly 737 MAX 8, Citation Longitude.

DCS World and IL.2 Battle of are examples of excellent 64 bit DX11 flight simulators, with a very complex environment being simulated along with the superb flight and systems modelling, that run perfectly with my 16 GB DDR3 ( i5 2500 cpu @ 3,3 )

Flying gliders since 1980

Flightsimming since 1992

AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)

If we survived all this time using only 4gb for 32bit platform, don't worry you will be fine with your rig right now.

so IF you are planning to buy new computer:

1) I highly recommend you wait, Intel will advance Coffee Lake release to 2H 2017 and looks like it will be 6 cores / 12 threads and with the same IPC as Kaby Lake.

2) If you really to buy something now, this is my recommendation

Basically for good / great performance.

CPU:

Intel i7 Skylake or Kaby Lake, because they have better IPC (instruction per clock) than Intel X99 or Ryzen 7 series, if gaming is your main reason, get them or i5 if you're on budget.

Mobo:

Any Z270 if you get an unlocked CPU and basically get the motherboard with features you like or need, can go wrong with brands like Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA or MSI

GPU:

I suggest to start with GTX 1070 or something with similar performance, like 980Ti, wouldn't recommend any AMD GPU right now (maybe when VEGA is released but I think nvidia have better partnerships for their APIs because AMD was out of the game for long time). P3D don't benefit from asynchronous computing (at least no one said about it for P3D v4)

Memory:

8gb ddr4 around 3000mhz

SSD

Usually P3D installed gets around 200gb, but maybe in the future the texture files will get bigger, keep that in mind.

Before anyone says anything about what I said regarding Ryzen, please see benchmarks published from good reviewers and the AMD statement about their IPC, you will have good performance on gaming, but worse than Skylake, which is Okay because there's no engine now that benefit from that many cores, because the consumer majority right now are 4 cores, if you use your PC for other stuff for Ryzen, the cost per performance is much better than Intel X99 platform (even if Intel gives better performance, but you pay much less).

Very interesting thread.   About SSDs, what do you think is te best for P3DV4?

Some enthusiastic say "Buy the best if you can afford that".... So yeah, ill go probabbly with 960 PRO by Samsum, which I/O Read speeds are a dream

Some extremist indicate that a low cost SSD with more capacity will do fine, like:  WD Blue M.2 1TB Internal SSD, so 1TB will do fine with new 64 bits capacity....

and

There are some others in betwen saying that a medium performance Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD will do the job....

So, talking about best hardware for V4 64 bits.....    Would you rise the bar or..... save some money for your girfriend may be?  ;-)    ?

From what I have seen  on my computer moving to an SSD gets you flying faster but once the sim is loaded there is no difference.....but you do save time and effort not having to defrag.

Good point, once loaded, no difference :ampun:.   Well, i bet/hope you just saved some dollars to all of us

According to LM, they indicate at the very begining that:    M.2 or Solid State Drive (SSD) is strongly recommended  -See Here-

So, i think that being the M.2 the entrance for LM, they are heading north to performance but sadly 64 bits cappabilities will require more space in a near future  for sure:blush:  Lets say you choose a 500Gb SSD M.2 SUPERFAST ROCKFIRE NASA Thing....... Well,   Now imagine about 80 Gb of FS Global Next Gen + 200 GB P3DV4 on top of W10 + Your personal usage programs...... Okay, the superfast thing is not going to make any sense if its true that once loaded the sim, there is no advantage of a superfast ssd over a high capacity ssd.

I see around that ssd speeds is related mostly to load times and nothing more, and i hope, because if needed a fast&Large data capacity SSD, it will definitely cause a true "stall"  to many flightsimmers...
