April 3, 200620 yr Hi Ray,I had the same problem but I was able to solve it yesterday.I removed the scenery.dat files; and I noticed I had two entries under GENERAL in the scenery.cfg. One with "Clear on Exit"= on and the other with it off, a letfover of any (automatic) scenery installation.Because I keep always a clean copy of the scenery.cfg, I deleted the entry that didn Edmundo Azevedo
April 3, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Ron,<I'm sure I am. Greenwich is just a couple of hundred miles down the road :-)<None that I'm aware of. Microsoft Antispyware and AVG open automatically but that's all. In any case they're been installed for yonks through several changes of the clock and this problem has not happened before.<>That would be useful. I'll do a search. Thanks for your help. April 3, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi JTek,That's very useful to know - thanks. I'm at work at the moment but I'll check this as soon as I get home. I'll also check if there is a cache folder and whether it contains anything.Fingers crossed :-) Ray (Cheshire, England). April 3, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Edmundo,I'll check that when I get home. Thanks very much. It does sound like some sort of caching problem that isn't being cleared.I have already removed all the scenery.dat files and let FS9 rebuild them but to no avail. Hopefully your suggestion will do the trick.Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England). April 3, 200620 yr This isn't a UT issue, it is an FS issue. It happens pretty frequently where the state of the scenery.cfg gets lost and is in limbo. The fix for the constantly rebuilding scenery.cfg is to go into explorer and copy your scenery.cfg to an alternate location (COPY NOT MOVE)Now rename it OldScenery.cfg and make another copy called NewScenery.cfg Place these two copies back into your FS9 root directory. You should now have three scenery.cfg entries that are all copies of each other with different names:OldScenery.cfgNewScenery.cfgScenery.cfg (original file)Restart FS9 and this will resolve your issue... You will end up with a single scenery.cfg entry and everything will be back in synch.Good luck, safe flights-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
April 3, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi JTek,WELL DONE!! :-beerchug You win today's star prize :-)The problem was the Canary Islands freeware scenery. It had several entries in SCENERY.CFG with the path in the Remote= line instead of the Local= line.I cut and pasted the relevant entries, saved the SCENERY.CFG and started FS9. The indexes were rebuilt as expected but after exiting FS9 and restarting it no more rebuilding. So anyone who has this problem and has the Canary islands scenery installed now has the solution. Thanks once again. A lot of your comments really helped me get my head around RC4.Again, glad it helped.

April 4, 200620 yr I've been using a utility called "fsscenery" for quickly putting my scenery.cfg back in order. If you goggle you will find a few references to it.I have it installed in a non-fs folder and to use it you just have to move a copy of your fs scenery.cfg into the same non-fs folder with the application, execute the fsscenery application and quick as a wink you have a beautifully rearranged scenery file which you move back into FS9 after first renaming the existing old one .bkp. April 4, 200620 yr Hi JTek and Ray,Thanks to both of you :-)JTek for your suggestion to Ray and Ray for stating which scenery had the 'remote=XXX'.I too installed that free Canary scenery Ray, and like you it uses remote= instead of local=.Off to change it now. Thanks both of you.EDIT:Slight 'gotcha', the scenery library won't let you edit or disable the affected canary scenery items :-(Guess it's back to square one and check for a manual install.
April 4, 200620 yr Hi Ray,If you have the same problem I had of not being able to edit the path for the Canary scenery then untick the 'empty CD scenery cache' (or similar) box on the scenery library window. When you start FS it will do the scenery building thing and 6 folders from the canary scenery will be added to documents and SettingsApplication dataMicrosoftFS9Scenery Cache. Because you have unticked the 'empty cache' box those folders remain in cache so FS no longer has to rebuild the scenery database. Now, not being able to change the path for the free Canary scenery may only apply if you have Simwings or Aerosoft's Canary scenery, which I have.Good luck
April 4, 200620 yr Author Moderator Hi Vulcan,I'm a luddite! :-lol After discovering I couldn't edit the entries in Scenery Library I hand-edited the scenery.cfg copying and pasting the relevant lines.I also have the Aerosoft Canary islands scenery and that might be responsible as you suggest. All's well now though :-)Cheers, Ray (Cheshire, England).
