Rebuilding Scenery a week after time change...

Hi all,A week after the clocks went forward I'm still getting 'Completing Setup..." and "Building Database..." showing each time I start FS9.I'm sure this is not connected to the time change as it never happened last October. In the last week I have installed Ultimate Terrain Europe and USA and Ground Environment but no-one in those support forums seems to be having similar problems.I just can't figure out what's the problem. I wouldn't mind if that was the only issue but I'm also getting Winsock disconnected problems with WideFS and the aircraft textures in the 'Create a Flight' window have lost many of their textures. It takes a reboot for them to return.Maybe the problem is linked to a out of memory problem I had yesterday with UT Europe but the PC has been rebooted many times and 'Previous Flight' - my default FLT - has been deleted. Pete Dowson has been helping and loading the FLT also crashed his system but gave no clue as to what specifically was the problem.I've had FS9 ever since it came out and thought that buying these addons would enhance my enjoyment but up to now it's just been a nightmare.I think the rebuilding indexes may be part of the problem. Can anyone suggest why this is happening and how to resolve it please? Thanks,

Hello RayCheck your scenery.cfg for numbering errors, i had this problem with one of the Ultimate terrain packages. Also see if newscenery.cfg and oldscenery.cfg are in the FS9 directory and move them out, then load FS9, load a flight then exit the programthis should fix the database rebuilding

Hi Mad dog,Thanks for your help. I've spent 30 mins editing my scenery.cfg to get the layer and area number in order - they were in quite a mess. I did have a oldscenery.cfg in the FS9 folder and moved that out. No sign of a newscenery.cfg.I then loaded FS9 and selected a flight and then exited. On reloading FS9 the building message still appears. :-( I have no oldscenery.cfg or newscenery.cfg now but I do have a scenerystatus.dat with a current date/time stamp.Although this doesn't actually stop me from flying it's a problem I need resolving. Could the scenerystatus.dat be significant? I tried renaming it but a new one was created. So what triggers FS9 into rebuilding its databases?:-hmmmCheers,

Ray, what happens a lot these days is that all that freeware and payware scenery we are auto-installing keep re-writing our scenery.cfg. It does get full of errors after awhile. You have to troubleshoot it constantly after new installations. There are two really good utilities that will check scenery.cfg files and repair them One is RanaInside, sorry, I don't have a link and the other by Dolphin XP ??? It's been so long since I installed these, I don't recall where I found them. They do a good job of keeping that cfg clean. Maybe some fellow simmer can provide the links.Lee

Hi Ray,I also have this problem and note that a number of my add-on scenery folders have a date stamp of 26/03/06 4:14 which is the date BST happened. Those folders have a 'scenery.dat' file with the same time stamp. That time stamp is also on the scenery.dat file in my add-on scenery folder (it is on a seperate partition to FS) but the time stamp on fs9scenery.dat is 20/03/06.I have renamed the scenery.dat files (so they don't appear as DAT files) in FS and add-on scenery and moved the 'oldscenery.cfg' file out of FS but still get the 'rebuilding scenery'.I seem to remember that we had this problem, or similar, when BST ended last year but I cannot remember the fix.

Hi Lee,I think you'e referring to Flight Sim Manager. Up to now I've managed to keep things under control myself but with all I've installed in the last week things have gone a bit pear-shaped.I'll take a look at that utility - thanks.

Hi Vulcan,I'm so pleased I'm not alone with this problem. Thanks for your post. I'm going to take a break as I've been at this all day. I'll check things when I've had some dinner. I just don't remember having this problem before and it isn't helped by having installed so much in the last week.Hope you're keeping well.

It's nothing to do with new installs Ray, the last thing I installed was 17/03/2006.

I appreciate that Vulcan but it's just that UT extends FS9's loading time and all the checking takes so long.Anyway, have you thought about deleting (or maybe moving) all the scenery.dat files elsewhere and letting FS9 generate new ones?I searched back in the forums for this problem using 'clock' and 'database' and found a few messages but nothing that related to this specific problem.I've downloaded FS Manager and will install later this evening. We really shouldn't need to rely on the goodwill of talented people like Rana to keep our SCENERY.CFG files in order. FS9 seems to make a right mess of it. I had several duplicate entries for UK2000 scenery but have fortunately managed to remove them.Until later...

Hi Vulcan,I decided to take the bull by the horns and delete all the scenery.dat files but not before zipping them all up afor safety :-)FS re-generated them all and then started. I exited and reloaded it. Unfortunately the same old thing happened. Do you have Ultimate Terrain by any chance? I'm just trying to establish if anyone who has these problems has any commonality in their systems.Cheers,

Hello all,I've now installed FSM v2.8.5 and it's tidied up my scenery.cfg and reports no errors. However, I continue to get the database rebuild notification each time FS9 starts and after speaking to others I'm not alone. So I wonder how many of us are getting this notification and what is triggering it? If I could work that out then I hope I could solve it. It started last Sunday when the clocks went forward and has occurred each time I have started FS9 since then.If only there was someeone from Microsoft who could advise. :-hmmmCheers,

Ray (Cheshire, England).

Are you in a time zone where the GMT offset is 0 (STD time)?Far out but I've see weird things with this.Do you have any utilties that might mess with your clock when FS opens such as the ones for time zone correction?"If only there was someeone from Microsoft who could advise. :-hmmm"I thought there was a monitored forum on mszone or whatever it is called.

Ray:Sorry to hear about your troubles. I have a hunch....Check your SCENERY.CFG file (in your FS9 root folder) by editing in Windows Notepad or any text editor. In each scenery layer, there is usually a line that looks like this:Remote=XXXXXIf any of these "remote" lines contains anything, that might be the problem. It means that the scenery is copied each and every time you load FS to a cache folder that FS9 creates. This can cause the constantly rebuilding scenery dialog that appears. After identifying the problem layer(s), close the editor and go into FS9's Scenery Library dialog to eliminate the caching (just click 'Edit Area' to fix the layer's properties).I've had this problem myself and racked my brain for the answer for months. Drove me insane, but the above was the answer. Hope this helps.
