FSGenesis Alps Terrain?

Featured Replies

I see FSGenesis have released a huge, very detailed mesh for the whole of the European alps.I have been using the Jonathen Ferranti, Holger Sandmann mesh which I am pleased with. Wanting complete coverage of the Alps and being an Alps enthusiast I am forever looking for more detail.Has anyone bought the FSGenesis Alps Terrain and if so whats it like? Are there any screens of this terrain?Peter

Yes, I bought it 2 years ago when I bought their Galaxy Membership :()Haven't downloaded it, but will today . . .Noel

Hi Peter,I bought it today, and I must say I finally recognise the Alps in FS2004 als I know them. The resolution is 19.1 m, and it shows. No more rounded mountain tops, sharp transitions between sloping hillsides and almost vertical rockfaces... It all looks much more real than anything I've seen so far (Terramesh, Holger Sandman, ...). It also blends in very well with UT Europe. The position of most mountain passes is very convincing, although there are still some places where I wouldn't dare to drive if roads were built like that in real life. Here's a view of the Matterhorn to give you some idea.Paul

Nice angle of the Matterhorn.May I request to post a picture of the "Tre Cime di Lavaredo"?That is if you know where they are without me giving you exact GPS coordinates. ;)

You're welcome. :-) But a great deal of the credit and gratitude should go to Jonathan de Ferranti and his source data, without whom and which it would not have been possible. On behalf of Jonathan and FSG, glad you're enjoying it. -------Justinhttp://www.fsgenesis.netHigh Quality Scenery for FS200x

The difference I believe ,(someone can correct me if I'm wrong) is that the rendered mesh in FSGenesis is more detailed resulting in a higher definition. Look at the screenshots. See how the edges and peaks are sharp. With 38.2, although nicely detailed, there is a tendency for the textures to look like a cloth draped over an underlying framework, kind of soft and rounded, whilst at the higher 19.8 the effect begins to resemble the sharpness of real terrain.. . sharp edges and peaks. I must admit, being partial to the Alps area, I am very tempted by this product Can anyone who has it please tell me how much of a frame rate hit it is over 38.2 mesh?

HI Peter,Holger's freeware Alps is compiled from 90m source data. The FSG 19.1m Alps is compiled from 22m-30m source data.-------Justinhttp://www.fsgenesis.netHigh Quality Scenery for FS200x

HorstThis freeware link then begs the question of which is better? The freeware or the FSGenesis version?Do they both offer the same coverage and quality?Peter

Hi Peter,My coverage is slightly bigger in the western portion, plus 38m coverage is included in the same package.Assuming no INF errors, and the same source data, the other 19m should be essentially identical to the FSG 19m. The other author also has a 38m product for about $23 (download) or $33 (CDROM), but unless he has updated it with the new data, it's based on 90m source data.FSG is based on 30m source data 38m/19m for $15 (download) or $20 (CDROM). So to get the same coverage from the other author as in the FSG package you'll pay about 50% more.-------Justinhttp://www.fsgenesis.netHigh Quality Scenery for FS200x

Horst,Of course, I obtained Jonathan's permission before using his source data. We are in regular contact. And proper compensation has been placed on the table.Same result? Not at all. Holger's freeware 38m was made from the 90m source data, as was the other 38m payware. And you may want to ask Jonathan who used his source data without permission or acknowledgment for several weeks. It wasn't either Holger or me. It was only after the fact when confronted that it was begrudgingly offered.-------Justinhttp://www.fsgenesis.netHigh Quality Scenery for FS200x
