GTN 750

Featured Replies

On the subject of the using Flight 1 GTN in the SF340, but hopefully taking this thread back on topic and in a less contentious direction, I have found that the procedure for getting the GTN to sync with the AP in the SF340 seems to be a little different to every other aircraft in which I have installed the GTN.

With most aircraft, such as the Fokker 50, I can set the CDI on the GTN to GPS on the ground before take off, then during the climb out I switch on the AP, select NAV and we're in business. With the SF340 however, I have found that the NAV button will not activate at all if I follow that sequence and the AP will not sync with the GTN. In fact initially I thought that my SF340 installation might be corrupt. However I fiddled around with the sequence and found that if I set the GTN to VLOC instead of GPS before take off then the NAV button will activate when selected during climb and, when I then switch the GTN from VLOC to GPS, the GTN will synchronise with the AP.

I know this is only a small difference in procedure, but I wondered if anyone else had noticed this and why it is different on the 340 or whether I am doing something wrong?

This sounds like a bug to me... I have not really tested the ins and outs, waiting for the promised V1.1 update to appear.

If this behavior persists, I'll have an in-depth look and see if it is fixable.

There is a VLOC/GPS knob in the panel as well.. see if operating it with the mouse wheel as the master switch makes a difference! Dial through NAV1/NAV2/GPS.

If NAV is selected on the autopilot, a NAV1/NAV2/GPS readout should appear on the PFD.

Where do you keep coming up with the $1000 price point? I walked through a real world GTN update last week and it set us back $310.00

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/shop-by-accessories/maps/avdb/gtn-worldwide-navdata-database/prod91245.html

Even the annual subscription is less than $1000.

Do you know for certain I didn't pay for a legitimate copy? How do you know for certain?

$300 or $1000 is not really the point..

And sharing a legitimate purchased copy is clearly a violation of copyright..

So, I understand the position Avsim is taking.

Having said that, expired paper nav charts are routinely handed out at airfields everywhere for free, so it is not clear to me that expired navdata still has commercial value..

The rotary knob on the VCP has to be set to NAV1 and the CDI on the GTN has to be set to VLOC otherwise NAV on the AP cannot be selected. Once the AP NAV button is active then the GTN can be switched to GPS and the AP will follow the flight plan as per normal.

As you say Bert, it may be a bug.

Yeah, I have this weird bug (it must be?) where I cannot click NAV on the MCP/DCP/VCP(??) to active if I have the GPS set to active on the GTN750. I must first put it on VLOC, then set NAV1 or NAV2 to active and only then I can set GPS to active.

I haven't updated to v1.1, maybe it'll fix it?

Really liking the plane so far! 😃

Try setting this via the rotary knob only.  The GTN will follow.

You need to have an active waypoint or flightplan in the GTN.

If I rotate the knob to NAV1/NAV2/GPS and leave it there, I can activate NAV on the autopilot.

Well done Bert.

In addition, you have any idea how the default CDU on the centre pedestal, can be obliterated..... maybe replaced by a blank piece of metal. It is clearly absurd to have it in sight when using the GTN.

To be honest, all Carenado FMS devices should be made enemies of the state !

You can put a plate over it, like I have done in the TBM850 mod.. but frankly, it does not look much better... better put an INOP sticker on it, like a2a does in their airplanes

Hi Bert.

Well I think I used someone's mod for the do228... it installed just one GTN 750, instead of 2, and possibly removed their default CDU.... I seem to remember. It left a black sheet over the "gap" left by removing the 2nd. Looks better without a doubt.

Of course one advantage of the default FMC is that it is undateable - I believe ? - with Navigraph.

But I'm betting that's the ONLY advantage....
