I am not into M.2. hardware as I have quite few PCI devices I could re-use? So, any Aus MoBo you can suggests? I am not all that a 'big gamer' except for P3D. Hi Rick After being averse to Asus motherboards, when I got my 8700k I went with an Asus board, as there was a cashback deal on Asus at the time, but went for the cheapest board, the Z370 Prime - P. I have got my 8700k clocked to 4.8ghz with no issues easily enough. I wouldn't worry about going for one of the real expensive boards, mine was £105 then £40 cashback. June 19, 20187 yr Once again, Martin, you are a great help here. Just what I wanted. As you have so rightly surmised. I am not into any Asus Z370 Motherboard with all bells 'n whistles as I do not need Wi-Fi, M.2, etc, etc, so your suggestions are a great help as well as alerting me to the fact that the ROG Strix is only a microATX, which I do not want. Thanks, too, Austin. Edited June 19, 20187 yr by vc10man Rick Almeida
June 19, 20187 yr it is worth checking out things like components used on mainboards. If you are looking to overclock the CPU, you need stable voltage supply, which entails a good quality power supply and high quality components on your mainboard. I am not saying everything HAS to be high-end, most expensive, but you need to be sure that you have quality parts if you plan on pushing your system... If you plan on stressing your system, then improve your system's longevity with quality components... A Andrew Entwistle

I had as Z270 Prime a while ago. One of the USB header pins was bent and when I gently straightened it, it snapped off. This plus other aspects put me off the Prime boards. Once up and running it was an okay board though.

June 20, 20187 yr @martin-w Question for your expertise. I have a Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced air cooler. Would that suffice for my new i7-8086k? Edited June 20, 20187 yr by vc10man Rick Almeida

Not sure why you would even consider it if you have the superb NH-D15S. It's a really old cooler isn't it, several years old. If you weren't bothering to overclock much it would probably just about suffice.

Sorry, Martin, I thought I had the Noctua D15S, till I checked my Scan buying history and discovered it was the D-14 instead I got for the Sandrybridge that I had bought prior to spotting that Haswell i5-4670k in Australia. Now you see why I posed the question. Not that old, Bought it in 2014, and just a few weeks ago fitted it to that Sandybridge-based rig in the office I work in. Oc/d SB to 4.3GHz and it's barely audible. Rick Almeida
June 20, 20187 yr Author You can almost certainly get a new 1151 secufirm mounting kit so you can install the D14 on your new board. It would be way better than the BQ cooler. I would replace the centrally mounted 150 fan with a new PWM fan too. You dont need to bother with the second 120mm fan on the D14 as it only makes 2 degrees difference. June 20, 20187 yr Thanks, Martin. On that basis I will go for a new Noctua D-15S as I liked the look of it, and the user feedback. Going to chew the fat on the Asus board. Rick Almeida
