Can we drop this argument please? That's what I call a diversion.

And talking about AM and core usage isn't? I'm trying to get the thread back on track, not divert it!

Anyone that simply slaps in an addon such as this with no appreciation of Cruachan's argument has the danger of increasing use of the core supporting the main sim process and reporting a duff app without any idea - that's very important to know.

Talking around the subject while waiting for further input is not a diversion.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that - at the very least it does seem to be unnecessary padding. I want to hear from those who have direct knowledge of the app rather than those speculating on why it may not make any difference.

Fact is not speculation - sharing use of a CPU has a hard hitting result - no need to speculate there - it's a given.

You have to wait for more input - please be patient.

That's what I'm trying to do - but I'm waiting for comments specifically about FFTF Dynamic. There's comparatively little input from actual users of the product in a what has somehow become a 23 page thread!

I'm fielding questions of all sorts as usual while we wait for more input. I don't mind they are all related to the application of such an app as far as I can tell.

Why not get a copy and try it?

Steve I looked at the graphs but its not what I see when I try the unlimited setting and the locked setting.

The reason we set Unlimited and VSync=Off is so that the sim is free running.

When we set Locked or Vsync=On the hardware is instructed to do things to a set period and the simple fps comparison you are looking for will not reveal anything of note.

Look at the graphs, they show a high fps we can see the difference the FFTF changes make to the way the sim loads data. Exactly as described in the manual.

Changing FFTF changes the amount of time data is gathered. But changing to locked or Vsync obviously alters that too.

The 0.33 and no FFTF graphs show a longer time collecting data compared to 0.9 which pulls in the data more quickly.

The simulator is set up so that the effect can be shown with a high resolution to be nicely evident in the graphic. Even so the same result is always visible to an extent.

Settings we might require to perform some sort of measurement are most likely not the settings we want for a pleasurable running sim.

So, if I'm not going to change my Unlimited frames setting in P3Dv4 UI there's no sense to even try this FFTF Dynamic software as it doesn't work alongside with this setting by definition?

It might only be sensible to play with it and see the result only if I ever ventured to limit FPS in Prepar3Dc.cfg.

Is that right?

Thanks.

PS: while I'm thinking quietly to myself what the hell did I buy that FFTF Live program from the same developer for

No - got that completely wrong.

I've chosen settings to demonstrate the effect of FFTF in a graph.

That's all happening in there whether you set vsync or locked or nothing.

Is there a way to monitor the results of FFTF changes with Vsync on or locked frames?

If I run my sim with unlimited FPS it is not as smooth and just overloads my GPU which seems very inefficient. Like driving down the freeway in first gear. To test FFTF with unlimited frames and then to assume that the results apply to operating the sim with vsync on or locked frames does not seem valid.

Great post Ted.

This will be difficult to do with locked or VSync=On. I'm looking into it.

You're completely missing the point here.

The graph results from a test to demonstrate that FFTF changes the sim loading speed in the way the manual described and quoted earlier in the thread. I don't fly with Unlimited and no VSync just like you. But you can't see inside that way..

The sim has to apportion time to loading and time for assembly (FFTF)  irrespective of your settings.

Hi Joe,

>>If we set Unlimited frames in P3D no matter what entry we put in the config file for FFTF it is ignored and does NOTHING and the sim runs as though it were 0.01?<<

This is what I see from the LM code. The main part that contains FFTF value is not being called, or it is being executed so fast that cannot be caught. But I also suspect that another thread is running in this case (did not find it yet) because of some other findings related to frames settings.

>>So therefore FFTF entries into the config file are only applicable when using Locked Frames (something I never knew)<<

Yeap.

>>HOWEVER through some "tricks" FFTF altered values do work in Unlimited mode (and obviously locked frames mode) with this Dynamic app.<<

Yeap. That's why it was in beta testing for over 2 months.

>>So your bottom line is if you want "modified" FFTF values when running Unlimited frames it's only possible with this app and we are accomplishing nothing by changing that value in a config file mod IF we run Unlimited frames, Correct?<<

Yeap. The part code looks to be ignored, so we have to force it not to be ignored somehow :-)

At this juncture I thought it might be worth reprising this post by Achilles. I’ve highlighted the relevant sections in bold.

I have both FFTF Dynamic as Booster Live 2018.

Friday evening I will make a short vid to show how fps change when the FFTF value changes. This can be seen in both Locked as Unlimited mode.

As I was one of the beta tester I did many tests in both modes.

@Mike : thank you for posting

so what I want to know now is if FFTF Dynamic is effective when one is using unlimited frames how so? Not looking for trade secrets here just some transparency to make an informed decision. I know that the frame limiter in Prepar3D has quite the FPS overhead! Now I understand that this overhead is directly related to FFTF value. The higher the FFTF value the bigger the Frame rate impact in a given scenario. When I have my SIM tuned to deliver about 35 FPS at Unlimited Frames I get very smooth flight at 30hz. So I want to know the difference between me setting the my frame rate to unlimited and rendering the default or edited FFTF value in the .cfg X0 and FFTF Dymanic changing the FFTF while I have set frame rate to Unlimited in the display options. Me thinks that FFTF dymanic perhaps changes the frame rate setting behind my back too to a achievethe goal of making FFTF value x something other than zero?

I which case that's no different from me not using unlimited frame rate!
