Hyper Thread or not?

Featured Replies

I just rebuild my i7-3770 Dell machine with Win 10 64bit and installed FSX-SE.  I currently have hyper threading OFF.  Is there any advantage to turning it on?

Thanks in advance,

On my experience, HT ON gives the better experience in terms of FPS and fluidity of the sim, and with no AM.

I would suggest turning it on and find out.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

The only advantage I've really found with disabling HT is that for overclocking I've been able to reach a reasonably higher clock (4770k).  IMO using either HT or no HT makes no noticeable difference.  I've found that FSX at default (no affinity mask) will "do the right thing" if it senses HT.  Some will strongly disagree with these statements (which is valid for them), and really what it comes down to is how one configures all the extra stuff that is layered with FSX, such as AS16 (weather), track IR, traffic apps, ATC apps, etc.  As mentioned, try it and see what works best for you.  There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to HT and FSX.

Hi Folks;

So here is my take, I actually went into my BIOS set up and check and noticed my Hyper Thread was set to 'Auto.' Now to me that meant that maybe it will get triggered  if an application is smart enough (or set up that way) to trigger it and I know FSX is not 😄 so I set it to on and set my AFEXMEM=64

Verdict is I really didn't see a vast improvement however, what I did notice was a smoother working FSX with all of my add-ons.  As TheFamilyMan pointed out If you have a lot of add-ons then that's where the gain may be and probably not on a plain vanilla set up.  I don't think I gained any FPS it was just smoother and the FPS didn't drop as much?!! Going into JFK with clouds/rain (which has been every day since the past 2 weeks) at night it goes between 20/25-30 FPS (my FPS is locked at 30) with an occasional dip to 15 every now and them. But didn't notice it dipping that far down with the fix (more consistent around 25-27) and as I said a little smoother overall. So for me I will definitely keep it on.

Now I listed what I fly with and my specs below so that everyone gets an idea of what I am running and what I am comparing. It wouldn't be the same for everyone but at least you know what I am basing my findings on. BTW I am not using any tweaks in my FSX config file just the required changes so any changes in my config file are due to changes done via NV/Inspector, REX4, Airport Scenery and the Steve Fixer.

Here is what I fly with.

- iFLY 747v2. which is tough on FPS. Sometimes PMDG 747 V2 (haven't gone to V4 since I am awaiting for the 800 series to be released)

- AS16

- REX4 Texture Direct with Soft Clouds

- ATC (always)

- All Airports I fly into and depart from are Add-on Sceneries no defaults, including Drzewiecki NY JFK (which i use as a yard sick since it is a FPS killer compared to the others)

DX10 (with Steve Fixer) and using NVI. Sliders in FSX set to med to max.

I have no add-on Sceneries thinking of getting the ORBX or GEX v2 it's a toss up still trying to determine.

My basic PCspecs (which is already 5 yrs old except for the graphics card) are:

- i7-4790K Processor (4x 4.0GHz/8MB L3 Cache Over Clock to 4.4Ghz

- 16 GB [8 GB x2] DDR3-1866 Memory Module-G.SKILL Ripjaws X

- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 - SSC 6GB Graphics card

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.

Forshaw.
