Can't wait to see this at JFK, London, LAX, and San Francisco!

That's interesting.  I'll be waiting to see how well it works,  We have virtually eliminated weather observers and forecasters at most airports and replaced them with computers.  Now this.  I can't wait to see passenger drones controlled from a 'building like this'.

Noel

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

What's virtual is the tower - not the controllers.  It will still be staffed, they'll just be working in a 1 story building with video screens fed by multiple 360d camera arrays rather than in an actual tower.

Scott

The article should say "remotely-manned" rather than "unmanned."

Maybe the day of work-from-home is approaching for ATC controllers.  😉

Makes sense since ATC Centers are not in towers, yet track traffic in the flight levels and lower with transponders, radar and other equipment.  Uncontrolled airports with a high volume of traffic are not as safe, I landed with a friend at an uncontrolled airport and some hotshot Cessna pilot had the nerve to cut in front of us after we called out final saying "well, you did not see me".  We approached him and I made it clear to him he was an word not allowed and we could solve the problem my way or get lost.  He got lost, other pilots at the airports saw what he did and gave him flak as well, closest I ever came to a midair with my friend's good reflexes saving us.  A problem with a pilot's license can sometimes be a dangerous ego boost I have found, and hours do not always dictate a safe pilot, as evidenced by the Canary islands disaster many years ago.

Probably be an Android/IOS app out for it by the end of the year.

Cheers
