September 6, 20196 yr Moderator In case you missed it, the "passenger on holiday" is actually a real pilot for EasyJet, so it was simply a matter of getting permission from management to take over as PIC for that flight. September 6, 20196 yr I'm curious as to whether it was that straight forward and handled as casually as it seems to have been reflected in the article. I would imagine that there would still need to be quite a bit of time to go through pre-flight briefings, other red tape, etc.

A good first officer has already prepared everything. You just take a quick glance at the papers/performance and off you go. Edited September 6, 20196 yr by FDEdev

When crew go sick or fatigue offloads. Normally happens on a Friday or Saturday nights, you'd be amazed how sickness and fatigue goes up at a weekend or when cross the pond is in, or when it's Brighton pride weekend. When I was at easy, We used to replace cabin crew (only a few times with pilots) with staff on staff travel all the time at easyJet. The crew used to burn their hands, hit their heads or similar injury on the way down route to a destination, so we would pull up the pax list on eres and find someone on staff travel and ask them to operate back. Its better than an 10 hour delay. As mentioned a zillion timea you'd be amazed at what happens on a Friday and Saturday night shift in occ sorting this stuff out. Happens all the time just the press picked up on this one occasion. Luckily at my current airline we can operate 'crew Down' its very rare flightdeck go sick down route, but it happens.
