PMDG 777 texture question

Featured Replies

Hey Friends.  I just purchased this addon yesterday.  I also own PMDG 737/747 with expansion for each and the QW787.  One thing I noticed immediately is that the textures/livery's seem to be a notch down in quality compared to the others.  Things like viewing the wing/engine from the inside airplane view.  Am I just missing a setting or is this airplane in fact a little lower quality than the 3 others I list in the quality department?

thanks

I think that's probably accurate.

As I remember the evolution history, the 777 showed up as an FSX product before P3D was on the scene, and minimizing the VAS footprint was one of the biggest challenges the modelers and programmers faced.  So I think the number of vertices in the models and the texture resolution was held down somewhat to keep the add-on from becoming a complete OOM monster in FSX.  The 737 is a much smaller model with less gauge complexity, and thus less constrained, and then the 747 v3 was made in the P3D era (by most accounts the 747 v3 is almost unusable in FSX due to OOM issues).

that makes sense.  Overall obviously a very solid airplane for P3D.  But for the price I was a little underwhelmed by that

Hi, now that you own it and tried it..would you still purchase it or would you have held off? Curious cause I’m thinking about getting it.

I’m still debating. The 747 is far better in my opinion. So maybe not.

I like the size and capability of the 777 and loved it in FSX...

Also found a lot more real life routes for the 777 over the 747.

Although the rainmaker on the updated 747 looks great!

Defiantly can’t go wrong either way!

i Could see where real world routes would appeal to some. I like that the 777 has the checklists. I just am having a hard time with the graphics quality. I feel like I literally had planes in fs9 equal to the texture quality with the PMDG 777.

I'll weigh in too. I have all the planes OP mentioned. I got the 777 in their surprise sale a while back. I don't think I'd want to pay full price for it. I don't regret paying what I did, but the 747 is a lot more advanced from a modeling perspective. I do enjoy those absurdly powerful engines on the 777, though. I'm not personally concerned about real world routes. I get planes I want to fly and fly them the way I want. I run Air Hauler and have been known to take jobs as short as 200 miles in the 747. Doesn't bug me - the fuel is fake so I'm not hurting the environment with such a short trip. 😉

I might be a little easier to please than OP, but I don't have an issue with the texture quality. Admittedly I spend most of my time in the cockpit, not an external view, but I think it looks good. I definitely think it looks better than their 737, which is pretty long in the tooth itself. On both the 737 and 777 I'd like to see some updates to the FMS - adding in the dlink capabilities the 747 has.

Thanks for the info on the 777... I think I’ll wait it out for a new version if one is ever made and maybe look into the 748 expansion instead...sorry to de-rail the OP’s post.

I can enthusiastically recommend this. It's so good that I hardly ever fly the -400 anymore.

Part of me wonders if the texture issue was not a big deal for 1080p, but much bolder for 4K users. Either way. The 747 is awesome. No chance you could regret that. Especially the -8

So to get the newest version of the 747 you have to buy the older base pack and the new 400 model?

Definitely gets a little pricey!

Yes you need the -400, I purchased the 400 series a while ago so it’s not such a hit to the wallet, having to buy the -400 and 800 in one purchase would hurt the ol bank account for sure.

I guess at this point my verdict would be to wish for a refund on the 777.  At the price point the value is not matching for me.  I like the 747 however.
