UPDATE: At last, I have confirmation that the source of the problem is the CPU. My friendly neighbourhood tech guy visited my house last night, and swapped out the i7 7700k for a working i7 6700k. We tested the 7700k first to confirm the endless reboot problem, and then he installed the other CPU. When this was tested, the bootable USB drive took me straight to the initial Windows 10 setup screen without any problems whatsoever.

The problem I have now is that I do not have the cash to buy a new CPU at the moment :sad:

At least you still have your original PC, disappointing though this development must be.

Have you thought about trying the Avsim Want Ads forum some simmer may have upgraded from a i7 7700k, worth a try.

That is interesting, and half the price of the i7 7700k (£250) from the same store. If I can get a refund for the new motherboard that I purchased (after being misinformed that this was the likely source of my problem), then an i5 7600k from CEX with a two year warranty would be a tempting option. Can someone tell me the performance difference between the i5 7600k and i7 7700k in P3D @ 1920x1080 resolution on a single monitor? I have always purchased i5 processors in the past, and I suspect that I could get a decent overclock on the i5 7600k with my Noctua NH-U14S.....

Even more revealing is perhaps this:

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7600/2432vs3890

I cannot find an i7 4690?

if I remember correctly that a 4690K is what you already have. I have a 4790K myself and see nothing that would not cost me a fortune to upgrade to for very little value to any of the current flight simulators.

I have an i5 4690k, but the processor comparison that you have linked to is the standard i5 7600 (which has a lower base clock frequency than the 7600k).

The upgrade path that I am following is listed below.....

  • Gigabyte Z97A Motherboard --> Asus Maximus IX Hero Z270
  • Intel i5 4690k CPU @ 4.3Ghz --> Intel i5 7600k/i7 7700k @ 4.8Ghz?
  • Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler --> Noctua NH-U14S
  • 16GB Kingston Hyper X Fury DDR3-1600 RAM --> 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4-4266 RAM @ 3600Mhz (estimated)
  • 2GB GeForce GTX 770 GPU --> 6GB GeForce GTX 980Ti
  • Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit --> Windows 10 Home Edition 64bit

What I would really like to know is how much of a performance difference would there be in P3D between the i5 7600k (4 cores/4 threads) and the i7 7700k (4 cores/8 threads) when used with the above system specification @ 1920x1080 resolution/4xSSAA/16x AF/2048 textures?

Done that, it is still not much of a difference.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-7600K/2432vs3885

but your original target seems to do better

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-4690K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-7700K/2432vs3647

This is why I will not be going down the same path yet

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-7700K/2384vs3647

particularly as it would require a new motherboard and RAM as well.

The 7600k is pretty much a 7700k with no hyperthreading as far as i can remember.  I'd be shocked if you couldn't get to 4.8ghz with it, especially with such a good cooler

I have just ordered an i5 7600k from CEX, so (hopefully) I will get the new PC up and running by the weekend.
