@Christopher Low, before buying another CPU, it’s worth checking to see if any pins are bent which could be a quick fix.

He's tried it on two different motherboards with same issue though. So unlikely the motherboards pins are bent and in exactly the same way on two boards.

Certainly worth checking though, and in particular the gold contacts on the back of the CPU, in case there's any old TIM or any other kind of debris present.

If I'm honest., I'm surprised if its a CPU issue. CPU's just don't fail that often.

After four weeks of trials and tribulations, I still do not have a working version of my new PC. After extensive testing (both by myself and a local hardware shop), it is looking very much like the CPU is the source of the problem. The good news is that the local hardware shop charged on a "no fix, no fee" basis, so I did not pay a penny. The bad news is that I was initially given what appears to have been incorrect information, and ended up shelling out for a new motherboard! However, I experienced exactly the same problems with this motherboard installed as I did with the first one. All of the other components (PSU/GPU/RAM/HDD/DVD etc) have been tested, and seem to be OK. Therefore, the finger of blame is starting to point towards the CPU.

That being the case, it looks like I need a new i7 7700k CPU. The problem here is that a new one costs £350, and I really do not have that kind of money at the moment. The only reason that I have even had the chance to build a new PC is because of the extreme generosity of my friends, but things have not quite gone to plan! So, does anyone here know where I could pick up a good second hand i7 7700k CPU in the UK at a cheap price from a reputable source?

I'm surprised if its the CPU, but of course it could be.

Has this CPU been delidded by any chance? If so, there could be an issue in that respect. In which case I would pop the lid, remove all liquid metal and pay attention for any liquid metal (which is conductive) anywhere it shouldn't be. And also any die damage etc.

Also any damage or debris re the gold contacts on the back of the CPU.

I doubt that it has been delidded by the previous owner, and it certainly has not been delidded by me! To be honest, at this moment in time I would prefer to hand it over to someone who knows what the hell they are doing. When I have a definitive solution, I can take definitive action (rather than the guesswork and messing about that I have been doing for the past four weeks).

You can also use a 6700k, which is slightly slower both on single and multi-threaded:

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700K/3647vs3502

If your cooling is above average, the 6700k will OC to 4400 and is more than adequate for flightsim use. I'd just caution you that there are a lot of fake Intel CPUs for sale in the secondary market.

I'm afraid I gave Chris 2 CPU's..one that I had delidded and was a bit dead, and a second 7700K that had NOT been touched at all.

I have a Noctua NH-U14S CPU Cooler, so that is more than good enough for a half decent overclock.

Not an option will need a new MB as well.

Mia Culpa then as I was under the impression, vaguely, that the i7-7700k MoBo and i9-9900k were compatible.

No different Intel chipset 270 the fact it`s a 1151 8th and 9th gen CPU`s will not work, and Intel will possibly have a totally new one this year 400 series new MB and CPU will be required that will keep the hardware manufactures happy.

Learning all the time.Z270 Series to current Z390 Series. So, next one will be Z400? So, am I right that the clue to which Generation CPU lays in that first prefix number, i.e. i7-7(770k), i7-8(086k), et al ?

UPDATE - I have finally made contact with someone local who can properly test my new PC, including the CPU! He is going to phone me tonight when he has found a suitable processor to test. However, he still thinks that it is more likely to be a motherboard issue than the processor. To be honest, I am not certain just how much testing was done in the first place, so hopefully this guy can help me find a way forward.

Just by chance posted today.

The upcoming z490 MB chipset I suspect the Intel 10th gen CPU`s not backward compatible.
