June 22, 20205 yr Hello, Planning to move from P3DV4.5 to V5, if HF2 shows improvement. However I need to install a new SSD drive due to lack of space. Thinking of either a Samsung Evo 970 M.2 1TB, or a Samsung 860 Evo M.2 which is considerably cheaper in Canada. How much of a difference would there be in speed, etc. Also is a Heatsink required for these units??? Any knowledge or experiences anyone can share is appreciated. Thanks. My System: Intel 9700K 4.7Gz, ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming, 32 GB Corsair Vengeance 3200MHZ, Evga 3070TI 8GB, Noctua NH-D15S, Gigabyte 27" Monitor, Windows 10 64bit, 2xSamsung 500GB SSD, 1x Samsung 120GB, 1x Samsung 970, 1TB, 1TB H/D for Storage. June 23, 20205 yr For P3D storage, I would use the less expensive option. I have several SATA 860s in my system, and no, they do not require a heatsink. Edited June 23, 20205 yr by Bert Pieke Bert
June 23, 20205 yr Author Thanks Bert, The new SSD I need to use for P3D V5 primarily, for storage I used a 1TB WD HD. The 970 is an NVMe drive with read and write speeds near 3000MB/s, while the 860 is an SSD with speeds in the 550 MB/s range. I just built a 9700K/Strix Z390-E system earlier this month, and the system included a 970 EVO. It is indeed fast, but only in loading applications. It does little if anything to improve the flightsimming experience, other than you'll spend less time waiting for a scenario to load. Of course, you'll spend less time waiting for everything the computer does to happen! Curious but here in the States the price difference between the two options is only about $25. Given that, I'd be leaning hard toward the 970 EVO. Either way, your motherboard has heatsinks for both of its M.2 sockets. HTH, Greg
June 23, 20205 yr I've been thinking about a Samsung 860 Evo for some time, thinking that it would improve blurries and FSX:SE performance in general as I only have spinny metal drives in my PC at the moment. Would I be mistaken in that view, Greg? Or are you specifically referring to P3D V4.5 and above (64bit program and all that..)? Cheers. June 23, 20205 yr Sorry Mark, but I don't believe adding an SSD will help with your blurries. The solution would start with upgrading hardware to add more processing grunt or moving some sliders a bit to the left. Regards 🍻
June 23, 20205 yr No worries. I was thinking that blurries (and I don't have that many and can live with the amount) may have been caused by the hard drive not shifting data to the graphics card fast enough. i7 950 3.06 GHz HT on. nvidia GTX 960 2Gb 🍻 Mark Robinson Part-time Ferroequinologist Author of FLIGHT: A near-future short story (ebook available on amazon) I made the baby cry - A2A Simulations L-049 Constellation Sky Simulations MD-11 V2.2 Pilot. HTH, Greg Thanks for the info, will see if I can get the 970 Evo even if it costs $70 more in Canada, extra speed when it comes to loading is nice. Thanks. June 29, 20205 yr SSD or M.2 will Not help with any FPS or smoothness. It will however help with loading your OS or your Sim. Preferably-by far- an M.2 I purchased a 2 Terabyte M.2 with a 3,500+ read/write speed and Iam very happy I no longer need to wait almost 4 minutes for my Sim (Sim- not Sin, lol) to load. Now, it only takes an average of 30 seconds to load the entire Sim. And that, my friends, is a beautiful feeling/experience.
