Sensible decision cap'n! Think of all the flying you can do when you would have been tweakin'!!!

he said windows xp only recognises 512 of memory? what kind of PC technician is he? not a very good one! Windows XP recognises up to 2gig of ram and in some games can make a MASSIVE difference! It wasnt PC world by any chance was it?Ian

>Last point, when I installed the Window XP I had 512 memory>and I asked for advice from a computer technician, he said you>can add on another 512 to your computer and it would not make>any difference to the system regarding the games. Window XP>only recognises 512 memory.>If you add on 2GB it will not make any difference.>You might want to find a new technician---Windows XP can use up to 4 Gb of memory---http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555223/en-usFSX is a good platform-- I has some incredible features. Like all platforms there is always some tuning to do-- but the thing to remember is that it is a platform that can be used as a stand a lone game...Compare it to Windows-- yes you can do a lot of different things with Windows XP out of the box. But we use addon and additional applications to make it do the things we want... Microsoft Flight Simulators are no different-- They are really Flight Platforms that allow us to download, purchase or create the addons that we want to perform our specific tasks... If Flight Simulator was limited to just the way it is out of the box, I never would have purchased it....But instead, I can add the air models that I want, the enhanced scenery for where I fly, the hardware tools that fit my simulations and situations. Does FS9 do what I want-- Yes... But FSX will let me do more-- I will be able to expand FSX far more than I could with FS9... and that, for no other reason is why I bought FSX

>he said windows xp only recognises 512 of memory? what kind>of PC technician is he? not a very good one! Windows XP>recognises up to 2gig of ram and in some games can make a>MASSIVE difference!Actually XP 32 bit can support up to 4 GB RAM.Regards,http://www.bremmekamp.com/img/misc/avsim.jpg

>My question to all those people who have already bought the>FSX is, first are they really, truly happy. Yes, very happy. On a reasonably good machine I get very acceptable frame rates and what I see on the screen is often stunning. FSX can do things FS9 can only dream about.> Second, don't>they get fed up with spending extra money on top for addons>when we have already purchased the addons on the FS9? No, not at all. I generally don't buy addons as there's lots of excellent free stuff. But I might consider buying the UK photoreal scenery. It's at about 1 meter resolution, far beyond the capabilities of FS9. Best regards, Chris

In answer to the questions are you truly happy with FSX and don't you get fed up with buying add-ons...Yes, I really am happy with it because it simulates flight in a vastly superior manner to previous versions, and that, ultimately is the point of a flight simulator.Yes permanently having or feeling the desire to get add-ons for flight sims is kind of annoying is some ways, but, there are not many hobbies or interests that don't cost some money one way or another.I will doubtless end up buying add-ons for FSX (I have done so for many previous FS versions, so this is nothing new really), although most of the terrain add-ons I have already seem to work in FSX anyway, and in the grand scheme of things, I could not bother adding anything to FSX and it would still give me a better sensation of flight.Lastly, you'd generally be better off stopping a person in the street at random and asking for PC advice, rather than asking the average employee at PC world. :-)

Although I can understand people with mid to low level systems getting frustrated about not being able to run the sim with all the bells and whistles, I agree with the other writer, I would never accept any implemented limits just to keep the thing flying smoothly on low-end systems. After 5 days of flying on FSX and doing a lot of comparison flights on both simulators, the FS9 with all addons ( Ultimate terrain, FS genesis, GE PRo, Active sky) seems strangely flat and unreal to me.

Kurt I agree. I switch back and forth between FS9 and FS10 and FS9 just seems so flat even with all my terrain addons. I kicked myself for buying FS10 when I first tried it. After I did the autogen tweek I love it! FS10 just seems so much smoother than FS9 ever was on my computerm the picture is so sharp and crisp, and I dont have to deal with the stupid stutters anymore. I guess if people dont have the right system to run it, then holding off from buying FSX would be a smart idea. Everyone has a different oppinion. I am really happy with this sim though.

>After 5>days of flying on FSX and doing a lot of comparison flights on>both simulators, the FS9 with all addons ( Ultimate terrain,>FS genesis, GE PRo, Active sky) seems strangely flat and>unreal to me.This is good news for me. I am going to try to stay patient and wait till Vista, DX10 with a good card, and the patch to optimize for DX10, then make the transition. I am very grateful to all the people here who will help all folks figure out how to make FSX sing. I am also very grateful now NOT to have to diddle around with all the countless hours of troubleshooting and experimenting to get the thing to work well on less than a top system. If toying with X will leave me feeling less than satisfied with 9, then I will definitely stay with 9 for the time being because . . . even after 3 years of 9, I STILL find it a total marvel, fly almost every day, and dang, it's smooth as silk. I know when the time comes the improvement should be breathtaking. Thanks to all you pioneers who will pave the way for a grand entrance for me and others who will wait maybe 6-9 months? We'll see!Noel

Yes I bought it, yes I am happy with it, is it perfect, no, but this is one of my hobbies and I REALLY want to see FX11, FS12, FS13 ON THE COMPUTER, not for a stupid console, so by at least supporting the company that produced the title I am doing what I can.You can whine all you want, but FSX has some great features and it will be even greater in the future. As for buying a new PC to take advantage of these features, I have 2 other games/sims that I need to upgrade for also and there are 2 coming out that I know I will have to upgrade for to take advantage of the new features, just how it goes. I have other types of developemenet software I use my PC for and these require lots of power also.Regards, MichaelKDFW

Very sensible.

>I am also very grateful now NOT to>have to diddle around with all the countless hours of>troubleshooting and experimenting to get the thing to work>well on less than a top system. Well Noel I only spent about 30 minutes tweaking FSX, and that's IT, and now it runs great on my system.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2.5 ghz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (94.47), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8, WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian
