August 13, 20205 yr I have an i4790k since about 2009 and looking to upgrade to AMD 3900. I was thinking of building all new, but like the case it is in. I was wondering if I can re-use my CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W power supply https://www.newegg.com/corsair-hx-series-hx750-750w/p/N82E16817139010?Item=N82E16817139010 with x570 motherboard? That power supply probably got barely 4 hours of use a month for the last 11 years. 10700k / Gigabyte 3060

That power supply probably got barely 4 hours of use a month for the last 11 years. The i4790 I believe first became available in 2014. It was the processor of choice when I built my current system in mid-2015. I am in the same bucket you are in. 5 year old system. I have a Coolermaster Mastercase 5 Pro case that I love and plan to keep if possible. I do worry about the master power switch on the case and my dilemma is do I build a new system into that case with a switch that has been used likely well over 2,000 times. Have no idea if a replacement switch would be available, and Coolermaster customer support is nearly impossible to contact. My power supply is also that age and cost me $119.00 in 2015. I will without doubt absolutely replace it with my new system. The power supply feeds all the components in your system and elements age even with low use. I will likely move to an 850 watt PS. If you're going with the 3900X you'll want a decent cooler. If you're going with a good quality air cooler you'll also want a case with good airflow. Not sure what case you have now but might be something to consider. Also the Zen 3 CPUs will be along around end of the year (probably). If you're going to go ahead and update now and don't want to wait and you're just pure gaming there's very little difference in game benchmarks between the 3700X and the 3900X. Especially at 1440p or 4k. You could save yourself some cash to put toward something else now or towards a Zen 3 next year. If you're heavy into productivity as well then the 3900X makes more sense.
August 22, 20205 yr He says he likes his case. I like my case too. I bought it in the 90s, and it still works.
August 22, 20205 yr My philosophy being an engineer is that low hours and heat management on your existing PS should make it good to go. If either of these are not true, I suggest a new one. They are cheap enough. Thank you. Rick $Silver Donor EAA 1317610 I7-7700K @ 4.5ghz, MSI Z270 Gaming MB, 32gb 3200, Geforce RTX2080 Super O/C, 28" Samsung 4k Monitor, Various SSD, HD, and peripherals

Sure it still works but cases have improved a lot since the 90s in terms of thermals and airflow. Also the components we're putting inside cases now are more power hungry and generate quite a bit of heat. If you're spending a lot of money to put in the latest components it's a good idea to have a case that gives them good airflow or coolers are having to work overtime which at best is going to be noisy. That being said the Coolermaster Mastercase 5 Pro case should be fine as it's a recent enough case and seems to have decent airflow.
