If you are a customer of Ultimate Terrain, a port from FS9 to FSX is available, post here: http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...8886&PID=107653This greatly enhances our FSX, adding back the so many missing lakes and rivers. Please read all the posts, as you will have to do an extra step if you wer running Holger's UT enhancements.Combining the texture replacements, with Justin's FSG mesh, and now UT - the difference is incredible. How long did it take us to get FS9 to where it's at, and FSX IMHO has exceeded it (scenery wise) and I have only had it installed for just over 2 weeks. Now with the water updated, its time for some fly-in fishin' trips in that shiny new beaver.Regards'Garetthttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160121.jpg

Ok I've adjusted my textures as per the original post and am generally very pleased with the new set. Thank you for the time taken to post your findings, Garett. One question I do have with the latest post for 070b2****. I'm a bit confused. As per your original post, I changed all these to 003b2****. Should I now be changing the "su" textures back to 070b2wi** and changing all the textures to 009b2****?

Hi Victor,I was trying to find a similar texture for 009b2 series, and I found the 007b2 series to be what I considered better for the regions affected. I know we have aleady used them once as the 003b2's, but since they are rarely adjacent to each other, I used them again. But to make them "drier looking" in the winter before they go hard winter white, I changed the summer to be the winter texture. (its lighter, drier, less green)So in short, if you have done everything except this last replacement, you do not need to change anything you have done to date, you only need to once again:Copy the entire 070b2** to a temp directory, make a copy of the 070b2su** within it and rename those as 070b2wi**When you have finished that, rename the entire 070b2** (including the SU to WI change) to 009b2**.Copy them over your backed up 009b2's.I know there could have been a shortcut there, (by just renaming the 007b2su to 009b2wi and the renaming the balance) but I explained it as how I did it. I wish I had some knowledge of creating a batch file to do this, as I surely would have made one.Question for you,"One question I do have with the latest post for 070b2****. I'm a bit confused. As per your original post, I changed all these to 003b2****. "You do mean you made a copy of them first, then renamed them,VersusJust changing (renaming) them to 003b2's, resulting in you not having 070b2's in your texture folder .... Please say you didn't ...If you have any doubts, let me know. I took the screen shots with the lat/lon locations showing, so you could go to these places and compare. I just want to make sure your seeing what I am.Regards'Garett

Ok thanks. So I'll have 1. A set of 070b2** textures renamed as 0032b**2. A set of 070b2su** textures renamed as 009b2wi3. A set of 070b2** (ex su) as 009b2**.Yes, I did copy the files rather than replace them!:-)I have a folder which contains copies of the original textures and a folder which contains copies of the amended textures.

You got her.Whew ...;)Garett

Just had a thought. When I rename 070b2su** textures to 09b2wi** and then rename all the rest of the 070b2** textures, won't I end up with two sets of 009b2wi** - the renamed su textures and the original wi textures?

  • Author

Yes, sorry.I am not using the original 070b2wi texture. I shouldn't have said the "rest" of them. What I did mean is:070b2sp* make copy, rename copy as 009b2sp*070b2su* make copy, rename copy as 009b2su*070b2fa* make copy, rename copy as 009b2fa*070b2su* make copy, rename copy as 009b2wi*070b2hw* make copy, rename copy as 009b2hw*I have attached a "map" for you of the replacement for this set. You can take a look and see what the difference will be, as well as if you DID use the 070b2wi texture for the 009 winter. It up to you, but I went with the 070 summer, because of the land lass call usually next to it.The second picture shows the "land class" that is predominently next to the 009 texture, so you can see the adjacent blend. The shot is of the winter textures.Regards'Garett

Thanks Garett for all your work. I renamed all the files as you suggested, and see a vast improvement, but I am still seeing the odd pockets of desert texture on the mountains when I fly in BC. Should I be seeing this, or is it possible that I may have missed a texture? I have the UT Can FSX conv, and FSG mesh. Thanks,Bill

Hi Bill, glad you like it. Go to Stewart BC when you get a chance ;)There are still a few isolated areas that are Land Class coded (08 Bare Desert) and (50 - Sand Desert). They both share the same 002 texture, and chose not to rename them for disrupting the visual impact south of the 49 where they need to be similar to what they are. I have encountered very few areas of this left, so don't hesitate to post a pic and I will compare with mine to make sure. Also, if you use the Land Class out of Holger's post above, in conjunciton with you UT port (Just make sure his is "above" UT in the scenery library) - not only is the desert call out reduced, his land class is much more detailed with greater variation - resulting in way better visuals for the affected areas. I am using this:http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...scen&DLID=68289LC_011_010_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_011_011_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_012_010_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_012_011_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_014_013_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_016_013_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_016_014_ut_bc_hs.bglLC_017_013_ut_bc_hs.bglBest Regards'Garett

Would I be correct in saying that a similar method could be used to tweak the European textures?

Short version - Yes,I will not BS you Victor, this is a royal pain in the arse - but its free and you can go back to default textures at any time (as in the time when GEpro is ready) I still think (unsupported idea of course) that it just may be easier to edit the terrain.cfg if you are going to do a whole "texture swap". As I said - (its an unsupported idea)The hardest part is picking default textures that don't end up being adjacent to each other called out in the land class (resulting in miles of similar "pattern") and not to drastically change areas that may really need to look like the original texture.I got the original idea for this after I bought GEpro & UT in FS9. The area around CYEG (West)is rural farm land, but the land class UT was calling out was more suburban. So as I have no clue on how to do landclass but I know how to rename stuff - for the time being (until I figure it out) I renamed the textures I wanted to see there accordingly. It ended up makeing a "Better Alberta" for me.Hardly a "fix", but it does the trick - for now. I just don't like the idea of having over 150 or so texture sets - but ending up only using 100 as your duplicating. Its limits the potencial diveristy.Regards'Garett

The idea is good but a lot of work :)Could it be done like this?1 - Backup textute dir:2 - create a bat file with this content:copy 056f2su*.* 013b2su*.* copy 056f2su*.* 013b2sp*.* copy 056f2su*.* 013b2fa*.* copy 056f2wi*.* 013b2wi.* copy 056c2hw*.* 013b2hw** Copy 050b2su*.* 050b2fa**Copy 050b2su*.* 050b2wi*.*Copy 128b2*.* 129b2*.*Copy 070b2*.* 003b2*.*Copy 067a2su*.* 056b2wi*.*Copy 056a2wi*.* 056b2hw*.*Copy 056a2su*.* 056b2su*.*Copy 067b2wi*.* 067b2hw*.*Copy 081b2su*.* 081b2wi*.*3 - run the bat inside the texture directoryJos

And this one is is for the snow ice textures. (instead of using and resizing the FS9 ones)It changes the 001b2wi, making them the summer ones. Same proceedure.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/160963.jpgRegards'Garett

Thanks Garett hugh improvement in textures now.:)
