The tide of technological progress is unstoppable.

Featured Replies

10 years ago, did any of us believed that we would be experiencing the level of realism MSFS is delivering? While I understand people’s frustration with the bugs and frames issues, it’s part of the natural process of innovation.

As I noted earlier, the tide of technological progress is unstoppable. As hardware improves and becomes more potent, so will our MSFS flying experience. P3D and Xplane will slowly disappear unless they can replicate MSFS remarkable breakthrough. The underlying reality is that visuals has been, is, and will always be the bedrock of any simulation.

I have to agree. I’ve been flying msfs versions 4 and 98 through this current one. IMO this is the experience we’ve been trying to get to all this time. Especially once VR support hits. Yes there’s bugs but unless they pull a 2009 and shut down the studio again, that stuff will get dealt with. Should they have waited a few more months for more polish? Sure. Am I happy with it in general though at this point?  Absolutely. No more 2d textures on the ground for buildings and houses, no more hacking dx10 to get a better performing and looking sim, no more absolutely flat runways, etc.

IMO it looks better than FSX:SE with all the orbx vector, global, and regions I had installed or at least very close in some cases but with much better performance than I could get out of it even with my current hardware.

sidenote: I’m not comparing to other sims. They have their own merits and there already enough devolved debate threads out there.

I agree but the biggest problem MSFS has, its realism is basically a visual one. Everything looks real and probably will look even more as the development continues. You don't have to dig very deep to find that realism fades as soon as you look into aircraft behaviour and systems.

This too will hopefully improve as time goes by.

True but it’s unfair to label this as genuine criticism less than a week after release imo.

default aircraft has never been good. This time they are miles ahead than the old sims as in how good default are.

Payware will be awsome. cant wait for PMDG.

I don't think that's a problem. They're stock aircraft and for stock they're still some of the best we've seen from any sim despite the bugs.

They serve their purpose well. They look pretty and they're accessible enough for the casual simmer that they don't scare them off.

I'm very confident that the gap for highly complex systems simulations will be filled by the third party developers who are experts at their craft. We just have to wait a little while longer and enjoy what we've got for the time being.

This right here ^^^  I think people are so used to having high quality payware available and have forgotten how it is to use the default stuff.  Just my opinion though 🙂

As a caveat I have no idea how the default stuff in XPlane or P3D performs.  I haven't tried P3D (nearly bought it a few months ago until I realized MSFS 2020 was coming) and only fired up an early version of XP11 demo a few times a long time ago when 11 first came out.  I never really used XP11 at all so I'm not familiar with it enough in any way to be able to offer an opinion on its default stuff other than to say they felt different than FSX's default stuff.

Not missing much. I guess they were ok because they were the only platform available. I stopped using P3D a while back because of all the bugs associated with the sim. Never tried Xplane. But as long as flight simulation exists, there will be bugs. Even MSFS will not be fixed in its entirety. It’s the curse of the sim community....living in a constant state of troubleshooting and fine tuning. It never ends, just read the forums.

Hell, the beautiful models for a lot of the planes already exist so it stands to reason that they could be adapted into more realistic variants.

True of pretty much any application, the endless permutations of software and hardware combinations means developers tend to aim for “stable” rather than bug free. Some might argue (particularly if they’ve had to deal with a lot of issues) that this current version isn’t stable. I’m sure those who haven’t encountered many issues will consider it the opposite. Regardless we all hope that asobo are going to make it more stable for everyone.
