Another review about the Scenery

There’s really nothing more tiresome than the old “concern trolling, followed by people accurately calling it out for what it is, followed by the original troll screaming about intolerance/civility/cancel culture” schtick...

You want to troll? The mods here may have something to say about it, but I don’t care. But you’ve got to own it and the foreseeable consequences!

just saying, Everybody has their favorite sim and reasons for using it, whether it's MSFS, P3D, X-Plane, FSX or FS20XX.  There's even still files being added for FS98 regularly on one of the other FS sites, meaning some people are still enjoying FS98 and creating content for it.

Specs: black box thingy with spinning fans, lights and a bunch of wires that go to screens with pretty colours and a keyboard with many keys. The black box thingy also has a push button activated coffee cup holder.

Live and let live works pretty well. 😀

I agree with the visual issues seen in the article, but before I start running out to pile addons into the sim and all the ensuing hassle of tuning tweaking incompatibilities bugs etc I'm going to give Asobo some time to address these things. On the positive side I've been pleasantly surprised with the performance on my laptop which just barely meets minimum requirements. Some visual issues I see might be due to using a low-end system but I've noted many of the same problems watching YouTubers with high end systems.

What's been standing out for me is the very poor 3D drawing distance when looking forward. There are 2 elements, one is that I cannot look far ahead before all 3D objects disappear and there's nothing but somewhat blurry texture, and the other is that when 3D photogrammetry objects do appear in the distance they are oddly shaped. When flying toward an urban area it looks like a bombed out city up ahead. There is also significant popping of 3D objects and mesh. On the other hand when I look left or right the scenery looks spectacular in its detail and sharpness. It seems the emphasis is on drawing detail to the side of the plane and not so much straight ahead.

I'm also seeing terrain mesh issues where areas in the ground (or water) break open and display a black seam that closes up as I get closer. Again this is mainly in the forward view.

I never understand the arguments that I have seen here many times which all share a similar theme: "Well, I'm old now, so I don't... this or that" (fill in the blanks with "care about gauges' legibility", "care about about scener...", "care about............"

Perhaps I am no spring chicken, but (before COVID) when I go to a restaurant and order a steak, I *still* expect it to be served to me properly cooked and tasting great. The arguments I have referenced are akin to saying in this situation "Well, I'm old now, and I used to only have the opportunity to eat dinosaur steaks. Ok, so this steak had more grizzle than meat, and ok, so they overcooked it harder than a hockey puck, but I am old now, and it is better than the dinosaur steak I used to eat a gazillion years ago, so I will simply accept it as is and eat it because I am old and I no longer care about taste and about such things." If a restaurateur gets away with that, then all the apologists for poorly-cooked steaks deserve all the chetty steaks they are served and, um, can eat!

If anything, my expectations are both higher and more demanding than when I was younger. I intend to expect great-tasting, properly cooked steaks until I can no longer eat! lol. All that being said, generally, I think the entire MFS '20 experience to date has been a very enjoyable and properly cooked steak (a few bits of grizzle here and there aside).

If you have lower expectations then you can only be pleasantly surprised when you are served with the most delicious steak you've ever experienced. That was my point, obviously requiring qualification, don't expect perfection but if it arrives, enjoy it and enjoy it all the more because you didn't expect it!

I'm just finishing my download of the premium deluxe on my system. Then I will tuck in.

Mmmmmmm!

There are places where the scenery breaks down.  Fly from Van Horn up the highway past El Paso to Las Cruces. Or don't, it's likely to break your heart.  Lots of problems with elevations around Pittsburg and others.  Flying Denali in Alaska has some odd issues.  You're going to see some mismatched textures and other anomalies.

Just realize that it's still a flight sim, it depicts the entire world, and it's not going to be perfect everywhere and some of the imperfections will have to be accepted and endured until they get fixed... if fixing them is possible.

When was the last time you were able to find your house in default scenery in any flight sim?  Then when we find it some people complain that it's not exactly right.  Well of course it isn't!  Most of this stuff is just the best guess by an AI.  Most of the time I'm flying somewhere I've never been in real life and would have no idea about what color the walls should be.  And seriously, the overall effect is magical.

You can sure tell who is actually flying the sim and who isn't.
