Simconnect - could someone explain?

Featured Replies

Lorby sir/madam. Thank you for the explanation on SimConnect.

It was just something else we all had to go and look for to get whatever Sim at the time we installed do what we wanted it to do, when it all should have been part of the original download.

I moved on to IL2: Cliffs of Dover. Built myself the only Hawker Hurricane working RL cockpit in the world, and flew the Battle of Britain Campaign every Sunday for 9 years.

MSFS 20 has given all of us the visuals we all wanted from the get-go. So here I am!

One more question, then. On MSFS forum I saw a tutorial for LittleNavMap. One of the steps gives a link to download & install simconnect. If you say Simconnect is included with the sim, should I omit that step or download and install?

Little NavMap currently uses the simconnect from FSX SP2 I believe to connect and doesn't currently use the MSFS20 simconnect.

Why were they not all "Backwards" compatible? Always been curious about that.

What do you mean by "all"? They are backwards compatible. You can use an FSX specced SimConnect addon from FSX:SE up to P3D V5 - if you install the legacy FSX SimConnect client.

Best regards

Meant the latest! Yes, they are.

So what are you saying?

I am saying that the installation and setup of an addon depends on the SimConnect version it has been made for. Some need an extra client, other don't. Setup is also different between your local machine and a remote one. The simconnect.cfg and simconnect.xml are just the client and server configuration files for a networked setup.

No idea about Plan G or what generation SimConnect it uses.

I'm not confused. One is a text file in my MSFS localcache directory, that apparently replaces the FSX simconnect.cfg file. I am supposed to enter my connection information, in this file. Ironically one of the values you enter is the IP address of the machine that the sim is running on. Well, isn't that kind of like asking you your own name?

The other is a dll file in Plan-G directory on a different computer. I have not control over this file.

The one in MSFS? The main reason why it isn't 100% backwards compatible is, that MSFS SimConnect itself is not complete yet. Contrary to popular belief MSFS has not been built by re-using FSX code. Most things are being reinvented from scratch, and SimConnect is definitely one of them. There is no telling if it will reach 100% compatibilty or if it will take a different path. When people claim that "old functionality is broken" it would be more accurate to say that a legacy functionality hasn't been implemented in MSFS - either at all or just differently.

Best regards

Affirmative  I have seen that too.

Also my program PSXseeconTraffic works with MSFS via the SimConnect lib of FSX SP2.
