Why does Dynamic Lighting kill performance?

Featured Replies

I have two airports where I have to disable Dynamic Lighting because it kills performance. There could be more.

The first is ORBX Bilbao but only at UHD resolution. At 1920*1080 it’s fine and explains why ORBX support couldn’t replicate the problem. In fairness to them they did offer a refund but I declined as I like the airport and as I fly in daytime it’s not really a problem. It was widespread at the airport.

The second is FlyTampa Sydney but it only becomes a problem when taxiing onto a runway. I was able to taxi around the airport without a problem.

Why does performance suffer so much with a decent graphics card? Is it still there with a 2080Ti or better? I would have thought a 1080Ti could cope.

Interesting topic.  The weird part for me is some airports are fine and others are a mess.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

Using SSAA and just straight up poor implementation of DL by scenery designers are the biggest culprits. DL in P3D is pretty inefficient regardless, though.

Simwings Heathrow is fine as are all the FSDT and Flightbeam airports. Sydney was driving me mad and I had FSUIPC setup to adjust Ai until 30fps could be achieved. Even when down to one I still couldn’t get 30.

But with DL off the Ai count went up to 57 which shows how destructive DL is.

are you still on V4 (just looking at your sig)? While not a panacea, V5 does offer significantly better FPS

ON my end it kills FPS too.

LEBB ORBX

YSSY

LOWI ORBX

YBCG ORBX

These are the ones with the haviest impact.

I did open a topic at P3D AND ORBX to make them aware of this issue. The higher the resolution, the higher the impact. Tests did show a exponential line related to resolution, As i use them also within VR, they become unusable. But hey said it is optimized and nothing can be done.

The strange thing is, that I have MUCH bigger airports with MUCH more Dynamic lights compared to them, and they don´t hit that much compared the once above.

This came with P3D V4.5 HF2! Before it was ok.

LM did change something on the DL with P3D V4.5. But a lot of devs did not make any changes on their products. at least not enough I think.

Yes. I’m in no hurry to move to v5 until the 5.1 version is out and is stable. This seems to be down to the design tools developers use. Maybe some need to consider changing if performance suffers.

I have MSAA 8x enabled.

@mpo910, it probably needs people to stop buying from those developers for them to accept change is needed. I can work around the problem fortunately.

Yes. You may be right. But I had no issues before 4.5HF2. That was the thing. What I don´t like is that they did not even make any small step in the direction to look at it. They where other users reporting exact the same.

The impact gets the heaviest as soon you come within the DL light bundle.......as soon you leave the light "pole" the FPS goes up.

LEBB is the worst one I have. And I can not even turn DL of in that one as it has no option for it.

I havent had any problem with stability in V5 since latest hotfix with a GTX1080TI and the DL and FPS are way better with DX12.The smoothneth is also way better.

I use 4k and maintain 25fps in all situation with FSL/PMDG and AIG AI with 40 AI.

Ray, I have a 2080TI and the performance in Bilbao at 4k using a high-end add-on aircraft such as the FSL A320 or PMDG NGXu is about tolerable (22-25fps), not good or smooth as I'd like. This is on V5 using MSAA.

Another place where I just had to outright disable DL was at ORBX KSAN. It became a slide show at 4k.

Maybe the answer is going for a 3080, but I doubt it.

So... you're not alone.

I don´t think so because I am on a RTX Titan with 24GB and still have these issues at those mentioned airports here, also KSAN....you reminded me 😉

Gents,

Appreciate all your answers. I've just finished some testing by slewing up a couple of hunded feet and rotating through 360 degrees at several major airports. With FSUIPC traffic set to achieve 30fps by adjusting Ai it's just a case of rotating the view through the densest view of the airport and when the fps reverts back to 30 (as the densest view has been passed) reverse the rotation. Eventually FSUIPC reduces Ai down to  a level where 30fps can be achieved. It varies from 50-90 at the worst airports which is still pretty good.

On dynamic lighting why should it even come on during daylight hours? You'd think it would be something triggered by light levels dropping as sunset approaches.

It's good news that P3Dv5 is better in this regard with DX12. I had intended to stay with v4.5 as FS Labs will be developing Concorde for it and v5. But first I need that 5.1 update and I'll watch the reaction from users.

And do these DL problems all disappear with it off? If so I assume you need it on as you're flying after dark. Being retired I always fly in daylight.

Yes. They will disappear with DL off. No hit at all in that case.

A price worth paying for fluidity. So it’s thought the hot fix by LM messed this up, yes? I suppose now that v5 is out the chances of a fix are zero. Oh well... ☹️
