How is your IFR?

Featured Replies

I see some concerns about IFR and wondering where a problem might start..

World map = set departure and arrival airport and runways. Set the waypoints or VORs

and the ILS frequency. Seems straightforward enough.

So are there 3 possible problem areas?

1) The aeroplane is not recognizing some of this

2) ATC interaction

3) Autopilot

I saw a Youtube video with fs2020 A320 default plane and it seemed to work ok, For the moment i am fine with basic flight planning procedures and

not looking for total real-world procedures,Rnav etc. Are 3rd party add-ons a workaround?

Cheers, dan.

No problem.

I just prefer beautiful skies and clouds.

I also do IFR flight in the Mooney and they are just as enjoyable.

MSFS

I don't use the flight planner.  So I think this limits me to traditional radio navigation.  (VOR/ILS/NDB).  Sometimes I can load an approach out of the blue on the default avionics, but typically it will not work well.

So I just stick to skyvector and VOR/ILS

Is skyvector with the sim or addon?

Cheers dan

The biggest issue is ATC.  You largely have to ignore them.  It's not a very immersive experience.

The AP and navigation aspects are fine.

It's a website...

From an airliners and glass cockpit perspective, IFR capability is not very good.

If you're used to the capabilities in xp11, even when using default aircraft, you'll be disappointed in this sim.

ATC will step climb and descend you based on arrival and departure constraints. If its bobbing you up and down its probably to do with waypoint info in sim. Apart from that issue i hear about, i tend to get along fine with ifr in sim.

Thx AP. Sounds like a few ATC wobbles but nothing that cannot

be workaround.

You just need to ignore it.  The ATC is not terrain aware so will have you fly into mountains if you follow their instructions.  They will also have you expedite a climb to 15,000 feet when you're near your initial approach fix, only to tell you seconds later to descend to 3000'.  It's maddening at times.  And don't ever ask for a vector to the next waypoint unless you want to go off in a random direction. 😄

OK🙂 So just continue with the basic plan/approach path. Will do

flightplanner is buggy but latest beta of Little Nav Map has support for MSFS 2020 .PLN files, so create your complex flight plan in LNM and export .PLN then import into the flight planner, works a treat.  Sometimes (don't know why) I have to reselect SID/STAR and I always have to select gate/ramp through the UI from the drop down menu, not using the zoom in feature (because this wipes your imported flightplan)

Thx. Funny that, I tend to avoid zoom iff there are other commands available in all kinds of programs.

Looks like a good program though on the default, Will check it out.
