It's a bad time to buy a new PC?

If some are having issues with 850wt PSU then it`s a pore product, the max you will pull likely with a 10900k and a 3090 is around 650, i use a 850w platinum more than enough.

Its debatable. Somebody posted on here the other day that the EVGA forums are replete with individuals with the 3090/3080 and having issue with 850 watt PSU's. Nothing definitive I would say. It may be related to the POSCAP issue.

But yes, as I say, Nvidia recomend 850 watts as minimum. Up to the user to decide if they wish to opt for the minimum Nvidia recomend or up the wattage a bit. 1000 watts is the next jump from 850, don't believe there's anything in between. There's about 60 quid diference in price. To some 60 quid is a lot, to others its not.

I notice you have a platinum. Well your opinion could also relate to that. As in, why spend money on Platinum when Gold is sufficient. The diference in electricity bill is barely noticeable. Thus "OTT" for efficiency. 🙂

A 850w platinum will perform as well as 1000w as far as stability is concerned in some cases a cheaper 1000w can have issues.

With that said, I personally prefer a PSU with big high quality Capacitors and a big high quality transformers ,,, the simple things in life. 🙂

Cheers, Rob.

Any recommendations?  My seasonic x750 is almost 10 years old!  I'll definitely be getting a new build whenever I do it.

Two power supplies, same wattage, one Gold and one Platinum of equal manufacturing quality should be the same stability. Its "efficiency" you gain from Platinum. And you would be lucky to save £5 per year. Thus, the additional cost is OTT, just like your statement that higher wattage is OTT. If you wish to avoid going OTT, then buy a Gold PSU from a quality manufacturer at 850 Watts, rather than Platinum. In many ways, Platinum, and Titanium are marketing gimmicks. I have purchased many Gold and Platinum PSU's over the years, and one Titanium. None of them were less stable, and none of them generated a saving on my electricity bill that was noticeable.

As for cheaper 1000 watt, I wouldn't ever buy any "cheap" PSU, from anyone. I would only buy from the best manufacturers.

I'd second Rob's EVGA recommendation. I've never had an EVGA fail. I have had Seasonic, Enermax and Corsair fail. 10 year warranty too with EVGA. And great support.

Its mainly the latest AMD and Nvidia cards that are hard to get now. Personally, I had a few issues finding a 1000 watt PSU, and now of course an EVGA RTX 3090, but I had no issue securing other components. 10900K was easy, RAM was easy. Storage was easy. Motherboard was easy.

Agree. But since i need the GPU and PSU to complete the new build i figure i will just wait. The other parts are easy to get.

In case anyone is interested in the difference between gold and platinum PSU's, Johnny Guru sums it up in this video. Savings are miniscule on your electricity bill and even heat is only one or two percent less. He claims Corsair are aware of this, so give you extra's to account for the additional cost, like fancy cables and brackets etc.

One nice thing about Corsair PSU's I do like, is the facility to switch from single rail to multi-rail. Nice to be able to set up your system to run multi-rail and when you test and all is well, no shorts, you can switch to single rail if it takes your fancy.

Yep, I'm in no hurry myself. Need a monitor, cooler, GPU, fans.

Cool.  I've heard good things about EVGA.  I like their GPU's as well.  You're right about the price.  260 USD for the 850w T2....oooofda.  I think I spent 150 for my 750 gold back in 2011.  P.S.  they're all out of stock too lol

So yeah, no parts no build.

At least intel's rocket lake will be coming in March '21.  Nice to have more choices, though in its current state MSFS effectively has one big fat thread that chokes performance, so just like it's always been, you'll want the fastest single core performance that's available, and eight of those as well.  You definitely want M.2 drives!  Don't even think of repurposing a sata ssd for a system boot drive in a new build.

I'm waiting on a rtx 3080 variant with at least 16GB to replace my gtx 1070 which does MSFS surprisingly well at 2K with externally locked 30 fps.  I too can see doing VR in the future, though IMO the tech still has a ways to go.  Though it's amazing to be in a VR cockpit, I just can't get around its like looking at a 640x480 monitor.

Look at the specifications of the i9-10850K.  It's only 100 HTZ slower than the i9-10900 and they've dropped the price lately.  A little more expensive than they i7-10700 but it's 95 watts compared to 125 watts on the i7 which makes the rig easier to cool and a gen newer.  You can find everything but a graphic's card.  Some are getting acceptable performance from 1080is. With a fast CPU you won't bottleneck it.  You'll be fine.   If you use at least a 750 watt gold PS you will have enough power for an upgrade in a few years.

I was going to build but ended up ordering a built computer which was the only way to get a 3070 card.    Christmas sales are on.  They change from day to day.  Lots of bargains on parts.
