December 21, 20205 yr In the past I have found far too many glitches after a restored backup or “system restore”. Windows registry entries etc seem to get lost, duplicated or otherwise not mirrored to a tee. The PC never runs as well as it did prior. So, if met with a major calamity that would require such action I would far rather format, reinstall Windows (less than 30 minutes), Steam and the sim. I know that’s not for everybody and not everyone has unlimited internet speed but I prefer to fly without CTD’s. MSFS stops working / won't start type of thing. If the above happens, and Asobo then release a working patch. One can load in their last backup, and wait for the update to release (don't start MSFS until everyone reports things are good). 30 mins as opposed to maybe having to download the entire kit and cabudle again.# I just thought backing up you drive was a sensible thing to do? Guess I was wrong, so very wrong. Therefore, I will stand facing the wall until the bell goes. Certainly nothing wrong with backups, I use macrium reflect and run what's called incremental nightly so can be used as a time machine, IE I just roll back to a point in time when things were ok, having said that I have to date had no issues with msfs2020 it's more for corruption, Ransomeware, HDD failure, Edited December 21, 20205 yr by Jetman67 Wayne such Asus Hero Z690, Gigabyte Aorus Master 5080, I914900K, Kraken 360 AIO CPU Cooled, 96 GIGS Corsair DDR5, 32 Inch 4K by 3
December 21, 20205 yr @Tinribs I can appreciate your thoughtfulness and concern. In the case of a program that requires updating prior to start, this methodology isn't really viable. I prefer to wait, read the community reaction to the update, and then start MSFS, knowing what I may expect. In most other cases, I agree, regular incremental backups are vital. December 21, 20205 yr I suspect that the majority of update issues are user-related rather than an issue with the update itself.

I all my years of IT support, I've never seen an Windows update that totally break Windows. That's in an organisation with 1000's of computers. Not saying it can't happen, and third party software or driver updates could cause startup problems but it is rare and usually can be fixed without reïnstalling Windows. Regarding software updates introducing new bugs, thát happens regularly, but is often solved by removing the update or reïnstalling the software. Unfortunately, cloud-dependant software like MSFS usually requires you to use the latest version, including the (new) bugs. 1 hour ago, Tinribs said: Don’t any of you backup your drives? Or do you just whinge when your OS stops working? Off course having a recent backup is mandatory. I've got a copy of the most vital system- and application settings on a different drive, and a backup of my data on a different machine. However, a full backup of Windows and all applications is almost useless IMO. It only takes a few hours to do a complete reïnstall of everything, including Windows, my applications and games (including MSFS). For my personal data, the only thing that might make me whinge is a ransomware infection.
