Ok I may give it a go at the weekend.

EDIT: So once you have installed it do you have to reinstall XP to the Linux drive or can you just run it from the existing installation?

reinstall the Linux version, what I used to do is cross platform the single XP instance but that had problems with certain things like the joystick settings  , but what you can do is copy the folders to the new drive and update it in Linux and it will download the Linux stuff.  Or if you have a very fast internet than redownload the Linux version of XP. DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY WORLD SCENERY, just download the base  , than you can copy from your current XP folder "GLobal Scenery" or hard link both "Global" and "Custom Scenery" simple.

I would suggest just look on the internet for different Linux distros , a bit of poking around would help you personally and get a fair idea what to expect if you have no prior knowledge of Linux.

My Linux install now mainly for my work and nothing else  as I setup Linux based VPN / Proxy / Firewalls / Email  servers along with PFsense.

Don't go on our words that Linux would be better suited to XP , you got to see it yourself and then decide

I wanted a single OS but then I have a few games that require Windows and do not want to keep switching OS's just for those. So all are now gamed under Windows.

This, all I can offer is my own, meandering experience.

I was there prior to getting the PS3.

Then I put the effort into learning to play games with a joypad, - that was waaaay harder than any of the linux stuff I've learnt along the way. But worth it for having multiplayer with no cheating sob's and the high quality exclusive titles.

In fact, Ubuntu is probably worse for GPU drivers, because they have all that PPA or whatever nonsense dont they?.

fedora is

telinit 3

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-460.39.run

reboot.

which is about as hard as it gets.

You should research some more

Ubuntu is also

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-460.39.run

Done.

PPA are usually meant for things not out of the box ,

Ubuntu is also

Helped my dad a bit with his when he went Ubuntu a few years ago for some realtime electronics he was doing, I didnt like it because they nuked the root user, but mostly because they dont have selinux

Quick google says they now have an experimental build.

I think the thing we are probably failing to point is, is fundamentally they are all the same, they can all run the same same software, what differs is the artwork, the versions of things they ship with, and the options that come as default.

Fedora is a good one to start out with, imho, because it includes the latest versions of everything, but its also not a long term desktop solution (ends of life pretty quickly), but that wont matter, because in 6 to 12 months anyone using linux for the first time is probably going to want a fresh install to fix all the things they broke trying random instructions on the internet anyway.

We're killing this thread tho, perhaps jamstro can start a new thread on this topic when he gets round to trying it.

Good time to end discussion which seems to have gone off-topic.
