hi everyone.have recently made the leap from fs 9 to fs x.i must say,at the moment im a bit dissapointed.before everyone thinks this is another fps moan or ctd moan,it isnt!i have had no issues with bad frame rates or random crashes.mine is more dissapointment of what the sim actually 'feels' like.ive been trying to put into words what i think and the nearest thing i can think of is that it feels too cartoony.everything looks to bright and false.(imho)i have been really enjoying playing fs9(with ut,ge pro, active weather,fe etc.everyting just looks and feels sooo wright.certainly dont want to sound like im trashing the game,im not.i just hope for something better.maybe vista and the lovely new dx10 card im getting soon will change my mind.....i hope sorichard

>I don't mean to contradict you, Richard, but if these pics>are cartoony then "Yabba dabba doo!">>Mike.>>Mike, you forgot to check the "JPEG image file" box ;-)I've uploaded them for you, and I see what you man, the stock cockpits, vc lightning and sky textures are far better than fs9.But I think the autogen buildings and trees pluss the daytime textures have very strange colors (too much beige and light green), and that makes the sim look cartoonish. Go over to the Screenshot forum and take a look at the colors in Feng's fs9 shots, looks much more like the world imo.I really hope GE will be available for fsx, these guys make very realistic textures, and the wx dependent engine is brilliant!Eagle

One thing you'll notice is that the sim does seem brighter, and the colours more vibrant. It will give the feel of cartoonishness at first, but before long it grows on you and you come to realise that real life is actually just as vibrant. It's just a matter of getting accustomed to the new look. There really are vast improvements in the texture quality, the mesh quality, and the sky hues that can't be reproduced in FS9.James

To tell you the truth Eagle, I've been trying to figure out how to post a link to an image, and suppress the appearance of the image itself, and the above post is my latest experiment. At least I got the image suppressed, but the above is still unsatisfactory. Your reply shows how I would like to post images. Maybe you could give me some advice.Mike.

Thanks Eagle. I had kinda figured that out already. What puzzels me is how to post the link without the pic taking up all that space on the page, and taking forever to download the thread. Your first post in this thread shows how I would like to post images: no picture, just the link, and it looks very tidy. This is all very off topic, I hope you guys will forgive my digression. I have posted this question in the Help Forum, so maybe this is not the place to discuss the matter.Mike.

At last I have an answer! Thanks for your help! And to reward you, here's an example:Mike.

I have posted lots of real world flying compares to fsx in the screenshot forum-and I agree about autogen. I think it looks cartoonish, and for me, the resemblance to real world flying at altitudes above 200 agl. starts when you turn it off, and then turn everything else up graphically in the sim e.g. highest display of ground textures, distance, and building objects. The photo real textures then show up (autogen blurrs them) and then start giving an astonishing depiction of real flight all the way down to about 200 ft. agl-where autogen starts to provide atmosphere. For me-autogen, at least in its present form, will be something from the past soon. I think the future is high detailed real scenery downloaded directly from the internet per the running the sim with google thread below. A capability to display autogen on the ground and low altitude only, for atmosphere in a limited area around the aircraft, thus preserving performance and looks-then the ability to have it fade out completely as altitude is gained-allowing a more photo real world look keeping good performance in all realms of flight is the future imho.Right now it is transition/compromise time-run it like fs2002/04 with autogen lowering performance and looking cartoony at altitude but providing stunning looks close down-or run it with with autogen off with good performance and more reality from altitude-which is where you are the majority of the time anyway if flying.http://mywebpages.comcast.net/geofa/pages/rxp-pilot.jpg

Maybe it won't be long before we have a 1 metre terrain mesh for selected areas, which will eliminate the need for autogen altogether. There was a link to a video posted on this forum a few weeks ago which demonstrated the possibility of a 1 metre mesh. It was stunning at any altitude.Mike.

As in real life I NEED to see trees and buildings, even with high res textures. I do agree, at altitude, the new textures do look great with no autogen, but ya gotta land sometime, LOLI was flying around British Colombia the other day with dense autogen and the forests are fantastic, almost like the real deal. This is what I have dreamed about in FS (now all I need is better FPS with this kind of density, LOL).Regards, MichaelKDFW

Your experience is common, don't look for miracles in the DX10 patch nor the possible DX9 patch. Beyond my obvious critism of Microsoft and how they do business, there have been enough other folks disappointed and frustrated with FSX to actually get a confession from Microsoft that they made a big mistake with FSX.The question is, will they be somewhat responsible and fix it soon, my guess is no because truely fixing FSX means a start from scracth rewrite and possible elimination of any compatibility with FS9 products unless M$ include conversion utilities. From a revenue perspective I can't see this happening -- but it might just force them to desing FS11 correctly -- at least that is my hope. FSX just doesn't get my load time on my PC, FS9 works better and looks better.Rob.
