How to manange SSD's

Featured Replies

Hi,

what is the best option when using a 1 TB SSD NVMe M.2 and a regular SSD 512 GB + external 4GB HDD:

What I need to to.

Install Windows and Linux. Install P3D/MSFS/XP. Backup for videos and pictures. Different software.

How should I split it? I thought I could use the M.2 SSD for my video and image ediging and when I am done, move it to the Backup drive. Otherwise I am unsure, how to proceed with the other software.

Is it enough, when I dedicate P3D, XP and MSFS on the 512 GB SSD? Are 512 GB enough? Does the drive speed matter?

Should I install Windows and Linux on the M.2 SSD (with 2 different partitions)?

How often will you be using Linux/how important is performance under Linux?

512GB might be a bit marginal for all three flight sims, especially when scenery comes into play. I perhaps put Linux on the 512GB SSD and then put Windows and all the sims on the faster 1TB M2 drive.

I agree, put Windows and your sims on the 1 TB M2 drive. Partition the 512 GB into two drives, one for Linux and the other for Windows for your images, video’s and documents etc.Use the external drive for your backups only.

I agree, M2 drives are the best for the OS.  In your case, partition the M2 drive and put one operating system on each partition.

Since I am going to reinstall everything, I changed my plan. I will run Linux mint via a virtual machine.

However, I am wondering how much space would I need for Windows at a sperate partition on the 1TB m.2 SSD. I plan to use the 1TB for Windows 10, Adobe Creative Cloud and MSFS. 500GB SSD will be used only for documents and privat stuff.

How much partition would I need for Windows 10 and Adobe Creative Cloud? I know it depends on which products I want to install of the cloud, let's assume I would need around 30GB for 9 Programs.

When I had to reinstall Windows, would that result in a reintall of MSFS either, or can I just leave it on the other partition?

I did a rebuild and ended up with much the same drive configuration. I loaded Win10 on a 160GB logical drive and P3D V5.1 on the +/- 800GB logical drive of the 1GB M.2. I have half of P3D drive left after installing all orbx and mesh and 15-20 airports.

M.2 rocks. No stutters and smooth smooth.

Windows will benefit the most from an Nvme drive. Applications like Adobe Creative Cloud will benefit too but not as much. The same is valid for Flight Simulator.
I recommend to install them all on the same partition. Partitioning your Nvme drive has no real benefit, except giving you an 'organised feel'. From my experience, one of those partitions will always be too large or too small in hindsight.
You can always create a 'Flightsim' root folder and use the SUBST command to attach a drive letter to it.
