MSFS reboots PC... can't fly at all: troubleshooting advice?

Featured Replies

After the last update MSFS rebooted my PC without any warning somewhere during loading. So I reinstalled Windows 10 from scratch last week and last night I reinstalled MSFS (Steam) from scratch. I was able to do two short flights, simply checking if things worked again. Victory, I thought. After that I installed the UK update and now my PC reboots again... no matter where I fly or what settings I use. The screen sudddenly goes black and the PC reboots. It usually happens when I am almost in the cockpit, ready to start flying. Before the entire reinstall the reboot usually occured during the initial loading of MSFS already. Anyway, I can't fly anymore AT ALL.

Question: where can I find any logs that could tell me what's going wrong here...? How do I troubleshoot this?

It really sucks not being able to fly at ALL, not even with a basic cub somewhere in the middle of nowhere... I was really looking forward to the CRJ but I can forget about that one for now. Or any flying at all...

You say that your PC screen turns black and reboots. Games crash but they don't reboot your PC. This sounds like a hardware issue to me, PSU failing maybe or your CPU overheating? However, there could be many more reasons such as a faulty Driver, malware e.t.c.

Could well be but how can I check what's going on...?

Yes, you should download one of the various apps out to there that may indicate a problem area in your hardware (while running MSFS).  Or take your PC to a local computer store for diagnostic testing.

I would have a look in the Windows event viewer

Windows->Type event viewer

Expand WIndows Logs. Look first in Applications and then System for Red Errors around the time this occurred. It may give you some clues.

Thanks. I see repeated errors around the time I get the restarts. The first one I see is this one (which I can see twice in a row):

And after that, a second later, I see this critical error:

These three errors happen every time in the same order.

i7 4790K running at stock speed, 16 GB RAM, GTX1080, SSD's. And no, I don't own any of those benchmark programs... Don't really feel like spending money on a probably one time benchmark... Don't really know which one to get for this anyway.

Seasonic S12G-650, 6 years old. Could that be it? Other games and programs run fine.

well its difficult from here, but my idea is PSU failing or your CPU overheating, other programs may run ok, but msfs is demanding.

try the free msi afterburner to log your temps and other stuff.

The first error message could indicate there is an issue with your storage. A driver problem or a hardware defect. I'd recommend installing the latest chipset and storage drivers.

Heaven is free (GPU stressor)

Timespy has a free option. (Blended stressor)

Crystalmark has a free option (HDD stressor)

CPU'Z is free (Cpu temps)

GPU'Z  is free (Used to monitor GPU temps and GPU power draw)

HW info 64 same thing..

Your throwing arrows in the dark if you can't replicate the problem with tools that can stress certain components in your system.

Otherwise you can hope a windows expert can decipher whats going on from error logs and even then the log may report an effect and not the cause.

If you aren't really feeling like its worth putting your PC through its paces then you probably should take it to someone who can. Otherwise you're gonna have to do a bit of research to find out what should be normal and what is reporting as abnormal.

Did you recently do anything inside your rig? Or did you move it around? I once had fairly similar issues and it took me quiet some time to realize that just one of the SATA power connectors was not anymore plugged in properly. To my surprise, not at the SSD end, but at the PSU end (I have a full modular PSU). Checking all other power cables on both the PSU and the component end and all issues instantly disappeared. Might be worth checking...

The error is indicating an SSD issue. Google "A TCG command has returned an error" and try to find the applicable issue/solution.

never mind..
