I usually start with prose, but this time I am so smitten with the visuals I decided to lead off with them instead.  This old girl was made for this new Sim.  It is an enchanting way to while away an hour or six, watching the scenery to the accompanying drone of 4 massive P&W Radials.  Flight is usually low enough that every nuance of vistas ahead, behind, below and above are visible and enjoyable.  That said this would all be for naught, if this was just another MSFS release.  It is NOT. 

This is a living, breathing, belching creation brought to you by PMDG.  While in Alpha, it has already blossomed into a splendid creature.  Several shortcomings in the prior versions have been remedied, and she is a totally new interpretation of a DC-6 from the 1950s.  As she finishes Alpha, goes into Beta and then release, she will be everything that I have dreamed of in a Douglas Transport.  She already has upped the immersion level by several factors.  Spatial sounds, stunning visuals and (the pedantic FDE pundits notwithstanding) mature flight dynamics and systems simulation have taken an aircraft I loved and raised her to a totally new level.

33,072lbs of AvGas will finally unfetter your dreams of Scandi flight.  MGW of 107,200lbs will let you haul the mail (or whatever else needs to get to Nenana tonight).  Managing her systems will have you in a sweat and busier than a long tail cat in a room full of rockin' chairs, BUT- if you want to save on deodorant- you can use the AFE to sit back and FLY!  For someone new to this manually controlled aircraft- the learning curve is made MUCH easier by allowing the AFE to perform the appropriate system management tasks.  Later, as I do, you can take over from him and manipulate and tweak the myriad levers, knobs, rheostats and switches- and feel a REAL sense of accomplishment as you navigate this lovely old girl through modern airspace single pilot.

I must take a moment and thank the Controllers in ZATL for putting up with me these past several weeks.  I have absolutely driven them nuts, filing ATL-CLT and CLT-ATL below 10k and then demanding early descent as they try to fit me amongst the traffic flow. She does everything, but doesn't do ANYTHING fast. 500fpm down with cowls tight will let you descend without torturing cylinders, but does absolutely NOTHING for carefully designed flow patterns for high volumes of traffic.  Again, to the fine folks at ZATL- I remain obliged 🙂

Anyway, I have to go exercise the old gal, and have to stop this meandering through pleasant memory.  There's a guy at the top who doesn't think much of slackers... off to the Salt Mines!

I am lucky to see Red Bulls DC-6 every now and then when it shows up in Innsbruck arriving from Salzburg. I definitely need that livery.

Carl, thank you for the post, cannot wait for this release.

David- I cannot stop my exultation.  All the FDE naysayers together cannot depress my enchantment with this grand old girl. PMDG has done what it does best- create magic!  If ever there was a sim to celebrate this type of aeroplane- this is it.  Are we all waiting for the SDK to blossom- YES.  Can a SUPERB simulation be created NOW- YES!  I can't wait for the skies to be filled with DC-6s and VATSIM controllers to put on a hurried traffic management seminar to deal with the total mayhem that will ensue.

I have been drooling so much that the Trolly Dolly has decided a new embroidered handkerchief would be the perfect Father's Day present.  I am OBSESSED with this aircraft.  She was always something I was especially fond of (my signature line on the PMDG Fora is proof) but, now she haunts my dreams.  I fall asleep thinking about reducing MAP 2" every 5 minutes, and worrying about keeping heat in the cowls.  I daydream about how to keep 160 KIAS to 4 DME (ZATL wishes I could do that!) and then hang out everything on speed schedule and still make my turnoff without using more than 20" MAP reverse.  I pore over charts and locate VORs and DMEs and plan position radials along my route.  I happily say "Unable" every time some poor controller asks me to spell RNAV/RNP/ANP.

Hey- I heard Jets SUCK (or do they BLOW?)!
