Float planes along Vancouver Island

Featured Replies

Time to try the amphibians!  Even though there is a lack of RTMM style float plane destinations in MSFS at present, I believe we can have a fun flight in our amphibian C172, XCub or Husky..

Here is a flightplan to look at..  Starting In Port Hardy, visiting Port mcNeill and Alert Bay, crossing over to the west coast via Woss, and ending up at the northern endpoint of the ever popular West Coast Trail, in Bamfield.

Flight plan:  https://www.dropbox.com/s/x3lpvl0dck6qg3g/VFR Port Hardy Seaplane Base (CAW5) to Bamfield Seaplane Base (CAE9).pln?dl=0

More details to follow.. 😉

Although the date for this flight is still not confirmed.. you can start by getting a copy of the Vancouver Island Mesh which makes it all look a bit better:

You have three options for the download... I suggest getting the "full" version, although the Northern (Main) option would work for this flight.

Second thing to consider is the aircraft you want to fly for this tour..

The C172 on Floats will definitely do the job, but the Aviat Husky adds some flavour to the wilderness experience..

Only $15, and after watching this video, hard to resist:

As for stops along the way.. I can talk to the whaling heritage of Alert Bay and the forestry economy of Woss, but Tahsis I have not been to, and is about as remote as it gets on the Island, while still reachable by car (from Gold River)..  https://villageoftahsis.com/

Bert,

I really like his videos, and he's got some nice history on that Husky - flown by Chuck Yeager himself!

Well, a pleasant surprise. The Asobo Husky is pretty good! (Should not be surprised given the recommendations of both Bert and Jeff.) More character in the air and less "default" feeling. And much better on the water. (As the forums indicate, a few smallish bugs crept into the final release. No doubt, these will be addressed within six months...😉)

You might try AIRPAC1's "Performance MOD". This is a fictitious installation of the Bush League Legend 210 HP engine to replace the default 200 HP engine. For our purposes, this offers two features. First, as intended, it increases the Husky performance by about 10-15kts to the point that it can keep up with the C172 and XCub. (AIRPAC1 suggests that the pilot use the throttle judiciously.) And second, AIRPAC1's application of the engine file allows the "hidden" GPS to function. (Minimally, this allows one to hold course and pitch using the "Z" key, by default.) My little testing indicates that this is a delightfully useful tweak. Tip of the cap to AIRPAC1.
