August 15, 20214 yr OK so I have a ton of addons in P3DV5.2. Seems now after an initial boot up of my computer it takes my sim about twenty minutes to start from the time the I hit start with administrator. After initial start I can shut down the sim and restart it all day long in about two minutes even if I leave my computer in sleep/hibernate mode and leave it for hours. I've viewed a couple U-TUBE videos on this issue including lining your scenery library properly and taking things unneeded out of the sim object file. These seem to help a little with performance but the initial start up is still long. I've seen past post about this with no real conclusive fix, so I just start my computer and P3D, then shut it down and put my system in sleep mode until ready to use each day then shut it off at the end of the day. My question; is there any harm to just never shutting your system down fully and leaving it in sleep/hibernate all the time? Do you need to shut your system off so it can clean the memory of things that might load during the day? Would this have an effect on performance over time? What do you do? Does anyone else have this long initial load issue? Vic green
August 15, 20214 yr I don't think there's any "harm" in it, but there are thousands of threads running--utilities, OS processes, AV etc...if any of them are at all ill-behaved w/r/t memory management, you can slowly "leak" memory (IOW have it allocated to some process and never returned to the system for other use) over time. I shut down my system when I'm done and accept the start-up time after a boot as a cost of doing business. 20 min does seem a long time to load, however. I think mine is closer to 5 min on initial load after boot, and I have a very complex setup with lots of AI acft and sceneries. That said, I use P3D Addon Organizer to group my sceneries into regions, and only keep the region(s) I'm flying in active, so a lot of my scenery is disabled and not being processed during any given start-up. Does anyone else have this long initial load issue? I normally leave my computer(s) in hibernate mode during the night, and in sleep mode while I'm doing other things. It's recommended to reboot once in a while (I do it once per week), unless there's a windows update or a software update that requires a reboot. I prefer that option instead of shutting everything down and having to use the upper power button to start them every day. With the time, those buttons can malfunction, as it happened to me several times in the past. August 16, 20214 yr I used to use sleep mode a lot, but with my new platform few years ago and migrated old OS, I always get BSOD after wake up. I now left my computer on 247 and only restart when needed like every 1~2 weeks.. But I never feel P3D starts slower after restart, I have nore than 300 secenry (
August 16, 20214 yr As per today I have 1205 scenery entries and lot of addon airplanes, payware and freeware. It takes me about 30 Minutes to start the sim with all of it. I often just put my computer in sleep mode to avoid this loading time and almost never have a problem now with 5.2 HF1. Before, the sim got slow, like 5 fps. Also if in outside view, the camera would remain static as the world rotates and then follow the plane for a few minutes. Seems this is gone too. The computer is restarted after an installation requieres this, mostly Windows updates. August 16, 20214 yr FWIW, I just timed P3D v5.1 starting after a cold boot, with central/southern EU and Africa sceneries active. 4:05 to get from start to the scenario screen. So 20-30 min seems aberrant to me. P3D is on a 2TB NVME SSD (a Samsung 970 EVO Plus). Maybe, but still, a five-fold difference? I would think maybe 50-100% faster might be explainable considering system differences, but 500% still seems worthy of looking into it a bit further.
