DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG solution

Recommended Posts

I’m posting this as a temporary solution to the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG error in P3D v5.

I have had no repetition of this error since adding the following entries to the Registry. I’m grateful to @srcookefor his help with this.

It should be stated this was done with 471.96 drivers. I have stayed with these despite later ones becoming available.

Before making any changes to your Registry make a backup. There is plenty of guidance on the web how to do it.

As with all these things you do this at your own risk.

  • Start RegEdit.
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers
  • Right-click right pane and choose New.. DWORD (32-bit) Value
  • Name it TdrDelay. Double-click it and enter a value of 60 decimal
  • Right-click right pane and choose New.. DWORD (32-bit) Value
  • Name it TdrDdiDelay. Double-click it and enter a value of 60 decimal
  • Exit RegEdit and reboot.

I would describe these settings as the best workaround until such time as Nvidia / Microsoft / LM issue updates for DirectX.

In the last couple of days of 2022 I had two DXGI_DEVICE_HUNG errors using drivers 471.96. That came as something of a surprise given they've been pretty stable over a long period of time.

So I decided there was no point in continuing with them and I used DDU in Safe Mode to uninstall them. At the end of that process there was a prompt to use NVCleanstall because even if you opt for the driver only option when running the official Nvidia driver executable other elements may also be installed.

So I opted to use NVCleanstall on 30 December and it installed the latest version - 527.56. The program listed various options all of which were unchecked and advised only Nvidia Control Panel should be selected from the list. But it wasn't listed for me. However, it still showed when I right-clicked the desktop so I went with the default settings.

My first flight was on 1 January and since then I've flown 17 further flights some as long as 3h 30m and including airports where this problem has arisen although I'm sure it's not airport related.

I've clocked up 25h 48m of flying time in 17 flights and had no repetition of this annoying error. I'm as sure as I can be that it's fixed.

So if any of you still get this occasionally consider uninstalling and then running NVCleanstall to load the latest driver. It may just work for you as it appears to have done for me.

The Registry settings in the earlier post remain.

Do you recall when your two DXGI_DEVICE_HUNG errors occurred?  What airplane did you use and where did you fly?

Flying the PMDG737 on all flights. The last hang was approaching FlightBeam's LFBO. I've also had the problem on approach to LFPG by Taxi2Gate.

Its very annoying to say the least,i ran a 1080 monitor with no  DXGI_DEVICE_HUNG errors in P3D for years,i got a 2K monitor for Christmas and now i am getting them on a regular basis, same settings(if anything possibly lower)with the same GPU,RTX3060 12GB.

Im not very good with PCs so i hesitate to try any of the so called fixes unless i total mess up my system.

Gary,

That’s an odd one to diagnose. The higher resolution hardly puts a strain on the graphics card.

Uninstalling drivers is not difficult and it may resolve your problem. Google “windows safe mode” and that will show you how to run in that mode. DDU and NVCleanstall  are easily found and should give you a more stable system.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the reply, yeah its strange how im now getting the error with just a new monitor.Just googled DDU and it seems simple enough(famous last words).Just a quick question are DDU and NVCleanstall 2 separate programs and which order do i run them.

Thanks,

Gary.

Gary, installing drivers is very easy.

1) Download both DDU and NVCleanstall. Two separate programs.

2) Boot Windows into Safe Mode.

3) Run DDU to uninstall current driver.

4) You may be prompted to reboot.

5) Run NVCleanstall. It will download and install the latest driver.

6) Once that is done open Nvidia Control Panel and check resolution and refresh rate are correct.

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who had tried my latest suggestion but is still getting the DXGI error.

Quite the opposite Ray,i have managed 4 full flights with no errors, plus i have had a tremondous boost with performance, dont know if you experianced the same after using DDU and NVCleanstall, but im more than happy at the moment.

It was quite easy as well just followed your advice.

Regarding the increase in performance, prior to using DDU and NVCleanstall my performance at Aerosofts EGLL was acceptable with the odd stutter when taxing, now after the reinstall the performance is smooth with no stutters, dare

i say perfect.

Gary, that's great news! I haven't seen the increase in performance you have but I had a feeling things just felt and looked better. Hard to quantify really.

I hope your flights are problem free from this annoying bug.

I can certainly back that up,things in the sim do look much better.

I had two flights today. LIMC-LIEO that took an hour and all was well.

On the second it was a 3 hr hop from Oklahoma City to San Diego. Both in the PMDG737-800. No DXGI problems but this was the view as I approached Rwy 27. I had a similar problem at EGLL after a 3 hour flight from Moscow.

In neither case were there any problems. Just wondering what's causing it.
