DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG solution

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I was thinking about possible changes and the only thing I did recently was adding a new software called Simsounds, for which I also added 2 additional soundcards (per USB), to assign different sounds of my Homecockpit to the different speakers.

So I tested with Simsounds and the corresponding soundcards being deactived  -and indeed the system is running stable as before. Now I believe, the error in my case has something to do with the additional soundcards. I recall for the previous flight, that the error popped up shortly after a cabin announcement was played via one of these soundcards.

I wonder if my GPU or CPU or power supply unit is not strong enough to handle all these devices in parallel. I need to do some further investigation, but at least in my case, it looks like this is the area I need to look at.

@michael1508, you’ve made no mention of the entries in the Registry. Over eight months since I had a DXGI problem. I’m still on the same drivers as on 1 January. No real need to update them for P3D v5.3HF2.

Well,

after installing Patch 5 yesterday, I did a series of short flights around LPCS / LPPT with the A2A C172, and the CPU was getting hot ) in the area of 72+ ºC ), even if within the limits, while the GPU was a lot colder (in the region of the 45+ to 60 ºC)...

I was trying to find the "perfect" settings for the GRAPHICS and NCP parameters, and all of a sudden the infamous "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG"  popped up, and when I hit CONTINUE, the sim was frozen. Had to kill the process.

Before applying the registry fix I think I should:

- Delete the P3D CFG file in order for it to get rebuilt on sim start;

- Maybe fetch / DDU-clean install the latest Game-Ready driver for my RTX 3060 Ti

I will probably also take that chance to re-enable SMT ( AMD's Multithreading )

Oh... I was really missing this mess around with the System and the sim itself after a long while playing that unbreakable MFS sim which is no fun when it never DEVICE hangs, or CTDs... 😜 ...

@jcomm, I can only refer you to the first two posts in this topic.

  • Make the Registry changes.
  • Go into Safe Mode and uninstall your current drivers using DDU.
  • Reboot back into normal mode and run NVInstall which will install the latest drivers.

At our monthly flight sim meeting a member was getting CTDs every few minutes with MSFS. I used DDU and NVCleanstall to update his drivers and it solved his problem.

Well, I didn't yet apply the "tweaks" but I haven't experienced that error again.

It's probably related to DX12 because while playing MFS I always used DX11 and never had that error while other users did complain about it.

The circumstances under which it popped up were always associated with me running MSI Afterburner + RivaTurner to monitor P#D and system performance, but after I reinstalled MSI I haven't ran into any issues.

I've been suffering this particular issue for the past few months now, where it would rear its ugly head whenever I was playing videos (Youtube/Twitch/other streaming services) in the background. Despite numerours reinstalls of various earlier drivers and using the registry hack.

However, the just released Adrenalin 23.10.2 drivers had a note about fixing system freezes and black screens when playing videos on RX 6000 cards, and since I'm on a 6800XT, I thought I'd run DDU and try those.

And lo, I've yet been unable to force through a DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG. Early days of course, but I remain optimistic.

Well,

I always stump into this "bug" when in a P3dv5.4 reinstall I start the usual sequence of add-on reinstalls and arrive to the A2A C172.

If I start a flight at some airport where it's raining then - CADABUM! - the infamous "bla bla bla has stopped ... " pop's up 😕

If I use another aircraft, including the A2A Comanche and P-40, no problem.

I am using the OP suggested fix in the registry, even added another one suggested by well known youtuber, namely:

"TdrLevel"=dword:00000003

and / or delete the shaders, install new Nvidia drivers, etc... but whenever the loaded aircraft is that A2A C172, and it's raining, there's that awful  DXGI_ERROR_DEVIDE_HUNG 😕

OTOH, there were instances where the error didn't pop up even with the A2A C172... Probably when the version of DirectX installed by the older A2A C172 is the last installed. I might try always fetching the latest version of DirectX from MS after the A2A reinstall process (?) as suggested also in the bellow video under Method # 5.

Using an old and efficient method, based on Display Driver Uninstaller, a neat app available from Guru3D, using the recovery start up options of Win 11 to get into a session with just basic services and drivers effective.

My recommended install option is to use NVCleanstall mentioned in the second post. I never had a single repetition of the problem since using that to install jjst the driver and not any other junk,

Hello from a SoCal rainy day

The DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG came back to bite me even with the registry fix in place (with the A2A 182/Bonanza)

I`ve removed all the registry mod`s and rebooted the computer

Start it P3D V.5.4 (without external weather injection "Rex sky-force 3d"

Switch aircraft to the Extreme prototype Lear 25

Using the internal weather preset (Heavy storm) and everything was fine

(BTW ,BIG thank you to St.Ray for the Job scheduler dialog for my Amd 5950!!)

Then I fired up Sky force 3d again (windy and rainy here)

And after 2 hours of back and forth between Klax and Ksan and let the Learjet  sit  between runways and rain coming and going (watching the landings) for one hour so far and it`s fine...so far

I guess it depends of the type of airplane maker/rain implementation(shaders maybe)... "goodbye A2A":((((

Let`s wait and see

With the 16 cores job scheduler fix P3D ,stutter are miniscule same with pauses  and everything is fluid like I`ve never seen before just amazing!

Maybe someone can modify the rain droplets (the main culprit it seems to me)

And we can all enjoy the best of P3D (better than  anything else so far)

MINUS the HUNG 😕

I too found it was somehow related to Rain + A2A 172, so, fresh install clean of any A2As...

If you get a DXGI error while flying with A2A airplanes under rainy conditions, you may try the following to avoid it:

- Rename or relocate the windshield.dll file in the folder  C:\Users\[Your name]\Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons\A2A\Gauges.  It fixes the error, but you won't see raindrops on the windshield.
- If you want to keep the rain effects, you can try to deactivate Vsync. On my system, I found that the error appears with Vsync on. Obviously, if you use Vsync to keep your FPS in sync with the monitor refresh rate, you will lose that benefit. You need to limit FPS internally if you want to have stable FPS (with the disadvantage that there will be a higher load on your system).

Note that Ray's registry fix does not fix the DXGI error related to A2As windshield.dll file.

Thank you @Afterburner, excellent hint, specially because my decision to drop the 3 A2A aircraft I own for P3D - C172, Comanche and the free P-40 - was costing me good memories of playing with their special models as A2A knows how to do so well...

I will surely give away the rain effects! The VSync though I can't give away 🙂
