Free Route Airspace over the UK

Featured Replies

NATS has today implemented the biggest ever geographical airspace change in the UK, removing long-established air routes over Scotland and freeing aircraft to choose their most direct flight path.

The new Free Route Airspace (FRA) covers approximately 150,000nm2 of airspace over the North Sea, Scotland, North Atlantic, Northern Ireland and a small portion of northern England

Wonder how long it will take for this to be reflected in sim...?

Thanks for posting Kevin.

Good to see continuing improvements in aviation's contribution to improve the environment.

I see overall FRA will gradually increase its coverage over most of Europe within the next 9-10 years with the whole of the UK not achieving complete coverage until end of 2026 since, as you mentioned,  there is still today only partial coverage across the Scottish ACC and London Control ACC centres.

Yes, I wonder if or when IVAO and Vatsim will adopt these new procedures. That will keep the ATC controllers busy I think!

I have been plotting my own low level "DIRECT TO" routes around the UK for years in P3D

Interesting.

Will likely take ages to be reflected in the sim (P3D) though, unless you use aero.sors.fr data and Navigraph.

@Christopher Low You cannot just go round treating all of your virtual airspace as Class G. If everyone did that, society as we know it would fall apart!! 😆

On a side note, only three days to go to my A320 full motion simulator session in Manchester  I will try to get a few photos.
