I fly (virtually) to escape reality. Not for RW flight practice, not to model new airfoils or airframes.

So it's pleasant for me to be able to get up with a couple friends four or five nights a week, in a couple of different planes, with close to the same flight plans, enjoying the weather, the scenery, but most of all: shooting the bull with my friends. Pretty much seamlessly. We look at the World Map, figger out where we want to fly from and to, spawn in on active runways (gasp!) or in parking areas, get our acts together, and rotate.

I've said it before but it bears repeating here: I'm all about competition in flight simulation software. It makes our very niche hobby stronger all around.

It is my understanding that MP isn't really a thing in XP 11.x, aside from using 3P adjuncts like VATSIM, IVAO, or Pilot's Edge. Please correct me if I'm wrong, here.

I realize XP-12 is still in early stages, but I would like to ask if MP/MMO is planned in XP-12 and how it might be implemented?

Don't expect much from initial release of XP12 on multi player side. Your best bet is MSFS2020.  The developer who was in charge of mobile version of multiplayer left Laminar Research. LR been very quiet on their multi player/MMO plans for desktop side 😡

If you want to fly with friends in a low latency way aiui you can set up a vpn and use XP11s default multiplayer. reasonably sure this will remain for XP12

AutoATC, although Ive not really seen it used for it (so if you try it and there is bugs plse ping me) is also zero setup mmo.

I appreciate the help, sir. I just like flying with friends/buddies. I'm not a high-cycle heavy flier (although I used to be); I'm more of a lower and slower pilot nowadays.

There is a tutorial for "only friends" here

about 6.50 in to see what it looks like. 

AutoATC is similar but there is no setup other than installing the plugin needed and/but the airspace will always be busy.

My apologies for not being more clear. I fly for a good-sized VA where an emphasis is placed on rapid-cycle flights of jets ("heavies"), from the Queen on down to bizjets, in MP, where we can all typically see where everyone else is (natively, in-sim, within a ~100 mile radius). We have a lot of fun BS'ing with each other. It's a solid group of people, with little rancor and plenty of fun. It's usually conjoined legs of flights that could start anywhere and end anywhere else, with pilots joining and leaving at will and at need. One can fly (and get hourly credit for) any plane in the VA database, from whichever field to whichever field (in the database) at any time one pleases.

That being said, there are also times when I prefer to fly lower and slower, in a smaller group, in non-jets, often below ridges and below/between clouds, enroute between what we hope will be interesting city/field pairs, instead of at FL350.

Point being, the multiplayer experience is seamless, in that it just works (to use a hackneyed phrase), whichever way I want to fly.

This is a choice I'd like to see in XP12.

right, so that is an option generally served by AutoATC, VATSIM or IVAO, all have their own clients which also put into the sim other aircraft on their network. Probably the biggest of the MP events is the semi regular vatsim cross the pond which is multisimulator.

In XP11 you already have a wide choice of networks/MP options. I'm still not clear what the actual choice is you are asking for, other than another option to do the same as you can now?

 

MSFS is really great for multiplayer group flights, vfr, sight seeing, castles etc. You gotta hand it to them they really nailed it.

In the context of XP12, making sure to "shout for" the good things others have done and "shout for" not making the same mistakes is perfectly on topic, if LR dont do it, if enough people want it a 3PD can.

But why MSFS? which probably has the worst of any sims inbuilt MP options?

Basic functionality like plugin controlled planes is still on the wish list, and the very best of multiplayer like:

is NEVER going to be added to MSFS by decree.

Kinda. there is plenty of discussion added by them on the feedback you linked, but I don't see anyone really having made the case that something is missing now that needs attention. I definitely DO NOT want XP12 multiplayer to become a simple checkbox.

What about joinfs? Its working fine cross platform and we are using it in our VA and exactly for this relaxed online faffing around for years now.

For the other world its using simconnect directly, for xp it brings a plugin. Documentation on the page itself and constantly updated atm.
