January 15, 20224 yr Moderator There was an enormous underwater volcanic eruption in the South Pacific near Tonga at 04:10 GMT today. 13 hours later and the shockwave reached me in northern England. Quite remarkable. Ray (Cheshire, England). January 16, 20224 yr That was an impressive eruption, no doubt about it. Yeah, what happens when Yellowstone erupts? Models indicate a significant eruption could result in the ash cloud covering much of the U.S. My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.
January 16, 20224 yr Author Moderator The shockwave went in all directions. The one from the west arrived first and then a few hours later the one from the east arrived. Ray (Cheshire, England). January 16, 20224 yr Scott Manley also has a good video showing the eruption and shock waves, as well as the pressure waves moving across the US and Japan. As for the Yellowstone volcano, don't forget about Long Valley, Campi Flegrei, Toba, Taupo and the other known large and super volcanoes. There may be one closer to you than you think. January 16, 20224 yr We heard the explosion in Wellington NZ, 1300nm from the volcano. It was a muffled but still very deep series of booms. Interestingly my family who live further north in NZ - with less land between them and Tonga - described the booms as much less muffled. I thought it was noteworthy that 150nm of moderately mountainous terrain was enough to alter the sound after over 1000nm overwater. Mark Adeane - NZWN

People close to that eruption had their eardrums ruptured from the shock wave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883_eruption_of_Krakatoa#Pressure_wave
