Is MSFS Real-Time Online Traffic doomed from the start?

This sounds like an installation nightmare...  Not to mention when they all need periodic updates!

It wasn't a nightmare at all. Like anything in life, if you want something good you have to work for it.... It took some time, but the results are short of amazing. The only thing that is missing is GA traffic....

Live traffic from MSFS...can not license all the liveries to be included in the sim

How so?

Interesting thread!

By injecting real-world traffic into the sim (great idea) doesn't that then require the built-in ATC to control that traffic - maintain separation, issue clearances etc?...I absolutely embrace the realism and I will be interested to see what MS / Asobo do with ATC in future.

Cheers,

Dave.

RW Traffic gets directed by actual ATC they deal with, so probably it's more apt to say we hope built-in ATC acts like it's controlling traffic and it already does a fair job at this.  I was pleasantly surprised when behind a couple of RW planes I was advised I was 3rd in line to land.  I believe MS/A will advance this further to the point there will be little to no need for add-ons, at least that is my hope and I don't see why they can't.

I'd just be happy if they could control separation on approach/final so I stop getting run over by the tubeliners.

How can 'they' control separation, if you're using Real-Time Online traffic?  That is done by real world controllers so fitting yourself within that is the challenge, no?  I guess you are asking the sim to fit you into real world traffic correctly.  That might be possible, if complex to do .

As long as they can get AI aircraft to vacate the runway in a realistic amount of time there really shouldn't be any separation issues if they're cloning ADSB data.

Yes for sure this part is undone, as is taxi and takeoff.   After that though, I'm hoping there is zero need for 3rd party fixes for Real-Time Online Traffic, and I think this is likely.

at some point for online based AI there needs to be a "handoff" from actual live data to InGame AI, so it will merge the real world into the Simulator world 😉 This is mostly needed for airport operations, since there is no tracking data

Not quite correct.  Since the PC12 model has been in IAG, All GA traffic is now visible but they are all PC12s!

I really wish there was one single add-on Traffic program to "Rule them All"!

Once installed it isn't a nightmare at all.  The longest install is AIG - just watch an install video on YouTube and follow along.  PSXT and Real traffic are easy installs.  I just recorded this at Chicago O'Hare.

This is a screengrab from my Android phone showing the Radar.  The App is ADSB Flight Tracker

Looks great!  That being said I wonder how much this ends up delaying MS/A from doing the same, or something very similar.  If this freeware ends up no longer being available then you're left in a lurch.  But yes it looks great and shows it can be done, and presumably without a ton of resources.  It's really a worthy aspiration for MS/A to do, but then again what's the hurry...

This happens offline or real time traffic regardless. As to Realtime traffic, It was my understanding that MSFS takes over handling of traffic during approach/final, through landing, taxing, and parking. Am I wrong? If I don't get run over and one is close when I make it to the runway, MSFS tells them to go around and they do. This wouldn't happen if it was traffic only controlled by real life controllers. MSFS controls some portions of the flight itself even if it's just the very last bit.

Edit: at medium airports, not all traffic is Commercial Jets. Thus ATC can fit you into line and ATC's job is to work out seperation. They don't instruct you to enter approach/final/clear for landing knowing a much faster craft will run you down. They vector flights around so that all can come in safely.
