February 9, 20224 yr This one's for Martin. Three good ones on Turner Classic Movies last night. Mister Roberts, Twelve Angry Men and The Best Man back to back. They talked a lot about Henry Fonda between the shows. Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart were great friends. But they did get into heated political discussions because they had different political leanings. They finally agreed not to discuss politics. February 13, 20224 yr He and Jimmy Stewart got into a fistfight over politics once, and Henry Fonda earned the nickname "Hammerin' Hank" after Stewart got the worse of it. 12 Angry Men is a legal drama I still actually enjoy watching. Jury deliberations are the legal equivalent of the NASA's loss of signal. Expected, but nerve wracking. The only inkling you get is if they send out some obscure note and you get to spend hours trying to read the tea leaves from it. But as soon as they walk into the courtroom to deliver the verdict you know. If they look at the defendant, it's not guilty. If they don't, well, I knew at least I was going home afterwards.
February 13, 20224 yr Author I was the foreman of a jury once. We didn't really need any deliberation. The guy was obviously guilty. We took a vote and it was unanimous. That was about 10:00 in the morning. I suggested we wait until afternoon to deliver the verdict so they would take us out to lunch. February 13, 20224 yr Author Yes, it was a criminal trial. Public defender or paid counsel the guy was obviously guilty. He and a friend had entered the house through the garage. They had everything they were stealing stacked by the door. A neighbor across the street saw them both break into the garage and called the police. His friend had already pled out and gotten jail time. But this guy demanded a trial. His defense was he wasn't in on the robbery. He saw his friend's car parked in front of the house so he decided to go in and have lunch with him. But he claimed he had nothing to do with the robbery. Noel The tires are worn.
