Auto Pilot On Heavy Jets

Featured Replies

Just returned after 2 years away now I have a PC that will run MSFS.  I am no expert and am struggling on the Jetliners , Boeing 747, 787  and Airbus  A320  (Default) to engage the Autopilot for the heading.

I can get VSI to work, Altitude to work , , and Auto throttle,  just cannot get any of them to turn to the heading I dial in.

Its probably something really simple I am not doing.

Any one give me a 1,2,3 of what buttons to press ? For each of them.

Driving me insane (er)

Many thanks for any help

Boz, to engage heading mode, you'll need to click the knob- push/pull it.

Hover your mouse over the HDG knob until you see an up arrow- then click it.

It's hard to do sometimes if you're bouncing around in unstable air to get the up arrow vs the circular arrow.

In the Boeing it's Heading Mode and Airbus it's Managed Mode.

Clicking the knob changes it back and forth from heading mode to lnav mode which get it's nav data from the fmc box.

Altitude- click the altitude knob to change from fmc managed to manual altitude mode- you'll need to engage the VS knob on the Boeing and dial in your desired rate of climb or decent..

Auto throttles- click the knob to bring up your desired airspeed vs fmc managed airspeed mode.

Also, get the FBW A320.  The default one is...  Less than wonderful.

Thank you Skully  , you are a life saver !!!!  Also discovered its easier to put cockpit interaction into legacy mode !

I think affordable desktop Boeing (MCP Mode Control panel) and Airbus (FCU Flight Control Unit) autopilot control panels would be big sellers given the market MSFS has opened up.

Hovering the mouse cursor over the panel controls especially when busy and you need to dial in quick changes or in rough air just gives me a headache.

Alway fun when it zooms out when your quickly inputting the data with the scroll wheel because the cursor went off center. 🙄

Yup. Ran into that a few times. So I removed the mouse wheel binding from the zoom controls. Instead, I'm using middle-click + mouse wheel for zoom control. This means I have to purposely hold the mouse wheel down while scrolling in order to do any zooming. A bit awkward, but much better than unintentional zooming when using the mouse wheel to change altitude or heading or speed... Pretty sure I only did that change while in the cockpit. Normal mouse wheel scrolling still works the zoom in other views.
