Texture Supersampling

Out of curiosity, is there a reason why one would fly with this off?  I've never really understood what the differences are between off and 16x.  Can someone explain that to me?  Thanks!

Sorry, 8x8 is the highest, not 16x.  What do these settings do?

Park at the end of the runway at 8x8.  The runway markings will be sharp to the end.  As you come down the settings, the runway marking will progressively get more blurred nearer to you.

So my new PC was set up and configured with MSFS and they left that as off and I am trying to figure out if there was a particular reason why.  It is a high end system so if anything I would think that it would be on 8x8.  I did a test and really saw no difference so maybe my graphics card can handle it without being on.  Who knows!

Not an expert on this but might have to do with the resolution of your monitor? 2k 4K?

Texture super sampling will render the textures at a higher resolution than what is set then downscale the texture to the set resolution. Your probably will not see this have any noticeable affect if you also have 16x anisotropic filtering set.

It wouldn't be a case of 8xSS being sort of a default setting in your graphics card (GPU).  It's either something in the app your using, in this case MSFS, or a driver setting accessed thru NVidia Control Panel.  Perhaps you've got it set up in NVCP for 8xSS so there is no benefit seen using 8xSS in-sim.  As far as your GPU being able to handle it that is something you can observe in something that reports GPU load/utilization, like MSI Afterburner w/ RTSS's on-screen-display, for example like this, in the upper left hand corner.  You can see the GPU is at 41%.  When your GPU can't handle it, it's getting close to 100% utilization or load.  This test, as it turns out, only works well when you limit frames in sim so that your GPU isn't cranking out more frames than it needs to in order to deliver X number of frames per second.  spacer.png`

Here is a screen shot w/ no frame rate limiter--you can see the GPU is running at 99%, pedal to the medal.  Frame rate caps itself because of that, in this case at 41fps, over my default lock of 30fps.  The 2nd image is when vsynced to 30, and so GPU is now 76%, CPU 27% and this is key:  30FPS was totally smooth, 41 not good at all.  I don't have a G-Sync display.
