Me too... but in certain jurisdictions addiction is a disability and rehabilitating an employee with substance abuse issues is mandatory before dismissal becomes an option. Factoring in the costs of training a pilot and wrongful dismissal litigation; the preferred option is often to send the pilot to rehab. We live in the age where infinite growth and the multiplication of human rights will have lead us to trust social remedies that will have been too often worse than our social illnesses. Think Exxon Valdez: charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and piloting a vessel while intoxicated, it`s captain was acquitted...  

A saying very early in my training.... A drink in 8 will seal your fate. Guess he never learned this.

When I worked as cabin Crew I worked with quite a few cabin crew with drinking problems.  

I used to work with a  bloke who always asked to be galley slave so he could hide in the galley setting up the carts and lay ups so he could sneakily drink.   Guy got grounded. Put in a program and now works on check in. Lovely bloke,  been dry 10 years plus. 

Whilst working in ops ive taken numerous calls from drunk crew calling in sick, we have covered their duties and then 12 hours later they have turned up to report forgetting that they called in sick earlier.  Muppets. 

Ive taken a call from a captain once on the M23 on his way to work where the cops have pulled him over, breathalyser tested him and he's been over the limit.  End of his career. 

And in my 12 years in ops I must of covered duties/taken calls at least 100 plus crew downroute with drinking injuries.  I even remember one cabin crew broke the nose of a BA first officer in joburg on a night out.  BA had to put a 24 hour delay on the flight 😁😁
