May 31, 20224 yr Are there any other VR headsets besides Oculus and HP that can actually run MSFS2020? Ive had an HP, a Quest 2 and a Rift S and I can't stand any of them, especially the Oculuses. I am having multiple issues with this Quest 2. Is Pimax or any others any better or have video cards not reached the level to handle them yet with this sim?
May 31, 20224 yr Sure. Suggest you go to youtube and search VR for MSFS2020. There are great resources there including reviews on Varjo and Pimax. VR Flightsim guy posts some good tips. However, I’f you’re not happy with Oculus performance, you might look at your system in general. I agree that Quest 2 has some quirks, but I’m hesitant to go spend another $ x00 dollars (x = pain) only to discover that another headset is only slightly better. I’ve used Oculus Rift, Rift- S, HTC Vive, and now using Quest 2 w/ USB link. rgds, JB 9800x3d, ASUS TUF x870, 64GB G.Skill DDR5, MSI Ventus 4080, HP Reverb G2 VR, FlyVirtual.net, Private Pilot SEL rating, subLogic FlightSim 1983 & every release since
May 31, 20224 yr @gryperI tried the Oculus first and it ran fine, but looked pretty terrible. Then I got the HP Reverb and saw a significant improvement in the visuals, but it still performed poorly and I had to turn the settings down quite a bit to get the frame rates to an acceptable level. After a couple of weeks of researching, tweaking settings. and downloading some free programs to help, my VR sim experience is nothing short of astounding now. The real game changer was the Open XR Tool Kit and Open XR Tools for Mixed Reality. With the right settings in Open XR Tool Kit, my frame rates went from around 15-17 fps to 35-40fps without significant degradation in the visual quality. I'm able to have most things set to medium or high in MSFS with High Quality Clouds, High Texture Resolution, and objects set to 80. The only major thing I've had to turn off was Reflections and Ambient Occlusion shadows, but even still my view through the headset is great. My main bottleneck right now is my RTX 2060 super, which is great for most games at high or even ultra settings in some cases, but it does struggle with MSFS when it comes to reflections and shadows in VR. If you've got the money for a PIMAX or Varejo then by all means buy one, but I really think the HP Reverb G2 v2 is the best VR experience you can have for less than a thousand dollars. Even at the 1,000 dollar level, I don't think you would see a noticeable improvement over the HP Reverb as far as I can tell.
May 31, 20224 yr Crazy as I own pretty much all of the major VR HMDs but the new Varjo, and I always find myself going back to my Rift S even over my Reverb G2 in MSFS. My Rift S simply works, never had any tracking issues with the Rift S out of all the HMDs and while not having the highest native pixel res, it has a very well thought out effective pixel pattern where debug tool 1.4SS and in sim 90TAA looks crisp and beautiful in sim. No need for SteamVR nor XR Tool Kit, the less tethers between the VR HMD and the sim the better for me. June 2, 20224 yr Author @blueshark747 I always seem to go back to the Rift S too. I like how it feels on my head and it is pretty easy to use. Turn it on and go. But I constantly get that blasted USB/display card disconnect, usually when over the outer marker getting ready to land. Everything goes black. Been this way since I bought it almost two years ago. I get this thing with the Rift S where if I look down at the FMC say, it will lock there when I pull my head away to look outside the cockpit. It takes a second for the view to catch up to my head, and it "rips" or "stencils(?)" kind of drags the view. I cant explain it accurately. And if I am flying in turbulence, forget about it. Framerates become horrible. @Jeremy - Wow, I wish I could figure that stuff out. I would probably have lots of issues trying to use that stuff because I know nothing about it. I also have a 2080 Super. I'll look into that and see if my brain can figure it out. Thanks. @joby33y - It probably has a lot to do with my system. i9-10600x, RTX2080S, 32GB of ram, good internet speeds, but I must have some settings off in any number of locations. I do get pretty good frame rates in rural areas and I recently bought Virtual Desktop and that has got rid of a lot of the stenciling issues with the Rift S, but it is a bit blurry. I've searched but I still don't know if it's installed by default or how to install it if not. Also, what settings do you use in OpenXR Tool Kit?

With a bit supersampling and some color correction via the OpenXR toolkit it also looks very good. (For reference, I use 1.3 with ASW locked at 30hz in the Oculus tray tool and 100% render scale in game with TAA. FSR with 100% and 30% sharpness in the OpenXR toolkit. No stutters anywhere on my machine and it looks great.)

Thanks. Note that it is even smoother if you can have it on auto, but you need to be able to consistently maintain 40+ fps for that. My machine can't quote do that with pmdg or Fenix at major hubs, so I lock at 30, which is fully acceptable. I sometimes switch to auto if I fly in sparsely populated areas with smaller airports. June 5, 20224 yr Can anyone point me in the direction of the download for Open XR and Open XR toolkit please and how to install it? All I ever found was the developer's website but no download link. Edited June 5, 20224 yr by threegreen
June 5, 20224 yr The Toolkit is available here - just install https://mbucchia.github.io/OpenXR-Toolkit/ Oculus already uses OPEN XR, so no need to install that Edited June 5, 20224 yr by paulferris1964 spelling

Thanks Paul From memory, I can double check tomorrow. Contrast 51 Brightness 42 Saturation 35 Vibrance 98 The rest is unchanged. There's a certain level of subjective preference to these settings, though. But I find this to be quite realistic. Not perfect, but much closer to reality than the oversaturated and over bright original. Also note that things become more washed out if you have contact shadows and ambient occlusion to off in the msfs settings. I have them on low, since they have performance impact. Some people recommend bloom off but I quite like the effect and have it on. Happy flying.
