What's the current state of play guys?  I know MSFS has some ridge airflow, but are convective therrmals present, or require add-on support like FSX/P3D?

There's an interesting initiative in the way convective lift is modeled and one that might start a really promissing track for soaring simulation in MFS.

In a way that was somehow the same approached by Silentwings in 2007, MFS is creating thermal updrafts based on Sun radiation and Albedo. You can already ( starting SU9 ) feel the effects and while they have their quirks, I'd say it's a promising start.

I have summarized a bit more about it in another thread:

I am waiting for ASOBO's revelations on the upcoming "soaring weather & activities" tittle - Hey, the name is my invention ! It's just that it was mentioned, more than once in the Q&A streams that they're working on soaring weather and gliders fine tuning for future update(s) / addon(s), with a specialized team from Aerosoft - probably the same hat was behind the "World of Aircraft - Glider Simulator" by Aerosoft, released 2021.

Soaring tasks can be really challenging and immersive but only if proper representation of the types / sources of energy used IRL are depicted with some accuracy in a flight simulator. Presently the tittles that more closely render soaring flight are Condorsoaring 2 and SilentWings ( rather outdated, long a v2 under development ... ).

Anyway the flights I have conducted using thermal updrafts, and somehow experiencing also some more or less realistic associated downdrafts, proved me that MFS, specially due to it's incerdible scenery accuracy, can become a very interesting and who knows fully featured platform for soaring simulation !

I have purchased premium version, but cannot manage how to use tow plane.

I have read manual, but still cannot take off with tow plane.

Any help or detailed guidance would be highly welcome.

It would be good for MSFS to have air movement visualisation as Condor has. It’s a great learning tool.

That's cheating 🙂

It’s a useful training tool. It’d also give some idea if Asobo’s weather engine is working to support soaring flight which I doubt.

They mentioned a few times already, and SU9 already brought "thermal radiation" based on Albedo, Sun altitude above horizon and other factors like cloud coverage. It's far from perfect, but it's a progress...

They're planning a soaring tittle and even have a team that was probably the same behind the glider / soaring tiottle released in 2021 by Aerosoft.
